Which Photo Style Do You Like Better?

BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've noticed over the last year that there's a new preference for coin imaging.

So I was just toying around with my camera setting on an old favorite.

Both images are raw with no post editing beyond the template.

Sorry I don't know how to do a Poll... So which style do you prefer image

Thanks in advance! image

Both are stunning, but I think I like #1 better. For some reason I can't fully explain, it seems to express that coin's obvious cartwheel luster better.

My first reaction, candidly, was it would help if you took photos of the same coin.

Then I looked closer, and noticed it WAS the same coin.

Clearly #2 is better to my eye -- it brings out the color.

    Which is closer to in-hand?

I prefer the one that looks like the coin when I have it in hand.

#1 probably is closer to the colors, but you really need more light towards the top.

I like the first picture better. Details are not saturated like they are in the second one, and I get a better feel for the coin. If you keep the lights where they are in the second picture and diffuse one or both of them a little, you'll still have plenty of luster, but you'll reduce the contrast and probably pick up better detail in the central parts of the coin that are currently too bright.

  • I'm a color guy, so I'll pick #2 by a slight margin. Although, I agree #1 shows much more detail.

I'd like one that is right between the two. #1 with little more light.

Which looks most like the coin? #1 has better detail delineation. #3 is good, also.

Number 1 is a better picture, clearly, but it lacks the "flash" that number 2 has.

The problem with 2 is the glare. Excess exposure drowns detail. (Hey, that's kind of alliterative.)

I'd toy with the lighting a little. I'd also reduce highlights and recover detail in software.

Did you shift the position of the lights from the sides (9 o'clock and 3 o'clock) and further away in number 1, to the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position and closer in picture #2?

I prefer the color in photo #2 but agree the definition gets a bit washed out, especially in the center.

Maybe a composite of the two would create the total picture.

It depends on whether I'm buying or just looking at pretty pics.
I'm not crazy about either to purchase the coin from.

Alot of the pics I see now have gone from nice to almost cartoonish.
