well going though my change i found this 1956d Nickel in very good condition, the first old coin i have found in change in many months

Always nice to see a pre-1960 in change. I get a few from the late '50s periodically, but it's been a while since I saw any '30s or '40s, and even longer since I got a war nickel.

where i am i don't find that many old coins in my change very often so when i do it's good

I still find a 1950s nickel in change at least once or twice a month. So much so that I just move it on and put it back in circulation. Now the 1940s are a rare find for me.

Nickels are the most common to be found "old" in change due to the long running design.

I got this '54 AU-ish Jeff in the till at work. That's a terrible scan- the coin had nice luster and pretty toning on it.




On the same day, or maybe give or take a day before or after, I got this Series 1934 $5 silver certificate!







That was a pretty good week for circ finds.

I love those old worn nickels, and it is always a thrill to catch one in change. When I first started collecting them, about 1970, I had the idea that the more worn they were, the more collectible they were. I always looked for the worn ones. It's a knack I have for mis-directing effort... I still like them, though.

I'm guessing that because of 40+ years of melting, some war nickels are now more scarce than the 1950-D.
