"Son-of-a....stupid staple! That was my nicest coin!"

I must say, a part of me died a little bit when I saw this BEAUTIFUL coin...with a big scratch!

I'm sure the buyer will be happy with it, the price was WAY below what the coin would be going for if not for the scratch (I hope Northeast doesn't mind my posting images.)

I'll wager that the toned over obv. scratch, and the little skitch under the right (facing) wing tip are contemporary test marks in an era of occasional counterfeits, and not staple or other collector mishandling

The color and overall appearance of that coin would override that obviously old scratch. That would make a nice addition to my Dansco.

Anybody that would take a coin out of a 2X2 that way deserves what they get!!!!!

Agreed. I use my fingernail and score the plastic, then push the coin through the window rather than risk scratching a coin.

I hadn't thought that it may have been intentionally scratched to check for silver content...still, it's too bad!

A much more fanciful story is that this was the pocket piece of Bernard de Marigny,
a New Orleans socialite who was dueling to the death in 1830. Carrying this bust half
subsequently spared him the tip of the opponents rapier.

Trees and Forest. If you focus on that scratch, you miss a beautiful coin. A nice looking piece, the scratch does not seem distracting.

  • appears too thick of a scratch to be a staple but it was certainly done by accident
  • It looks like an "old" scratch. For some reason or another, those don't bother me as much.
