I came across it in a search and it just strikes me as wrong. What do you think?? It's over at eBay.

The reds seem pretty red...and it also seems odd that the toning would not be on the same end of the coin, on the bottom of both the obverse and reverse.

I agree... I don't like her tone either; she sounds like my ex-wife! image

I kinda like it. It looks kinda AT, but I still like it. Maybe an old cardboard holder that got wet or exposed to some chemical?

That seller seems to bring out all the color in his coins might have something to do with his lighting. I would say in hand it will look more real.

It looks NT to me. I have seen splashes of color like that on a good number of Walkers, Mercury Dimes and Washington Quarters from the 30's and 40's.

While the picture may be juiced a bit, I vote real, and I know how it could have toned that way ...

A coin set in a holder at an angle (in this case the sun pushed as far back as possible while the olive branch was probably all the way up against the top "slide") ... would create more space over the two toned areas, and more surface area from the holder in close proximity to the toning that developed

If that's how it toned, and I suspect it did, naturally ... the coin was left untouched for some time in it's position

I vote NT. It is interesting, though, the color is so isolated.

    here is a similar dime.

Looks NT to me. I bet the colors are better in hand than these images show.

I kinda like it and wouldn't have a problem placing a bid if it were a coin that I needed for my set. image

Looks NT to me too and although not visually dramatic color I'd still rather have that then a dipped out MS66.

I don't hear anything from it....what tone do you hear?

I like it. Not worthy of much of a premium for the toning, IMO, but an attractive and desirable coin.

the questionable aspect isn't the color, it's where the color is at. coins just don't normally tone like that despite the theory put forth by Todd. as a matter of fact, the way they tone is in the link provided by fcloud. i don't generally deal in absolutes because Mother Nature loves to fool us, but i'm willing to climb out on a limb with this one and say i believe it is no way NT despite the holder, the seller and the opinions of other members.

then again, i could be wrong.image

Looks like it came from a 1947 mint set. Certainly looks market acceptable.

Why would someone artificially tone a coin in such a specific location? One might say that it was a failed attempt at something more "spectacular." I doubt it.
    I say NT.
  • Dont know about the toning but I dont like that coin as a 66 anyway. 64 maybe?image

Golfer 72 beat me to the punch. I think the toning is NT but I think the coin's at least one point overgraded.

Awesome.....image I guess I better edit and say I like the color, and the luster is quite strong. I believe it to be a natural toned coin, after all it is in a pcgs holder! image I've sen some stranger colors before, more so than this one, and so have you keets!!image
