When asked how the balance of payments will be addressed, Japanese freqwuenttly say when the big earth quake

strikes, the payment balance will dissappear.. A rather ominous prediction indeed.

Not to minimize Japan's calamity, but, can you imagine this media and its frenzy and irrationality if they were around in 1883 when Krakatoa blew its top? Some 40,000 people were killed and the median earth temperature dropped a few degrees for years after due to atmospheric ash. There was winter in DC during the summer. I'm sure the blame would have been put on Big-Railroad or smoething. image

Why in the world would you want to earn three Master's degrees? Sh_t fire and save the matches!

I quit my grad study when I realized that a Master's in the field would get me a position making less than half of what my salary was.

    1) Still planning on going to Japan on Thursday with lead lined panties in tow.

    2) Nothing new from the State Dept. Same warning in effect.

    3) The person I was to travel with to Japan ducked out. She is probably smarter then me. I'm going solo.

    4) My travel agent seems to be the most nervous about me going. I think it's because I'm her cash cow and she can't afford to lose my business

    5) I'm going for many different reasons

    a) I want to show support for Japan. They have been very good to me over the years.
    b) I do have work there
    c) I do have a semi- girlfriend there
    d) I'm curious

Well, good luck. Just remember that song from the early 70's called "Pollution," with the line "....just don't drink the water, and don't breath the air!"

Wow, I'm touched by all the well wishes.

I actually was forced to cancel my trip to Japan. China is starting to quarantine travelers coming from Japan. I need to be back in China for April 4. I'm disappointed and somewhat relieved at the same time if that makes any sense.

My heart pours out for Japan and their people.

    Thank you again

MJ, my heart is gladdened by your canceled trip. You are too valuable to the Forum

to risk the unknown dangers that today exist in Japan. We may not know the full

extent of the radiation problems for many months to come. Stay safe my friend.

Yes , these were rumours i heard yesterday and they appear to be well founded. I don't know if the full scale of this has sunk in with many people.

Japan says no end in sight

Radiation has seeped into the soil and seawater near the stricken nuclear facility and made its way into produce, raw milk and even tap water as far as Tokyo, 140 miles to the south.

TOKYO — Radiation levels recorded at a village about 25 miles from a stricken nuclear power plant are over recommended levels, a senior official of the International Atomic Energy Agency said Wednesday.

•Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told a news briefing there appeared to be no end in sight to the crisis. "We are not in a situation where we can say we will have this under control by a certain period," he said.

Well there was a run on salt while I wa in China due to the event in Japan. It went up 400% IF you could even get it. Go figure. Salt is outside my trading grid so I missed that one. I re booked my Japan trip for May 1.

I'm worried for Tokyo's aging population in the summer. I don't think the electrical grid will able to handle the demand. In fact I know they can't. You can not live in Tokyo is the summer without air. It's brutal. I believe blackouts will be commonplace...............MJ

In my area (Yokosuka) so far the blackouts have been a no show (we feed off the TEPCO grid apparently), in the last 2 weeks every day the scheduled blackout has been called off. Other places (closer to Yokohama) they had been getting them, but only sporadically as apparently people are doing quite well in reducing demand. I do agree it will be a lot harder in the summer though when there WILL be more demand. It's probably a drop in the bucket, but the Navy base reduced demand by 75% (of course 2/3 of the family members went home and the ships pulled out).

I remember seeing pictures of the Ginza lit up like Times Square on steroids. I wonder how much juice they saved by shutting down those billboards.
