Player endorsed board games - Roger Maris and Dizzy Dean

I could've put this in the 'mail-call' thread - but wanted to feature the players. I know this has very little popularity but humor me - I'm getting old....

Both games don't come up as often as others and a fun addition to my collection.

First:

Roger Maris Baseball Game - 1962 - Play-Rite Games - Jeffersonville, IN

This game is in just OK shape - and the little cards with faces of ball players is not part of the game - I took this pic off the ebay sale.

The bulk of the Maris cards are missing - I believe there should be 88. If this game were Nrmt and complete - it would probably go for like $400.

Also, like the Mantle game, it comes with a 5x7" photo - missing also. I would like to pick up a pristine one in the future.

Game card with "play" in the back.

I would guess this card would be a must for the Maris collector?

And second:

Batter-Rou Baseball Game - "Recommended by Dizzy Dean - 1955 - Memphis Plastic Enterprises.

image

We all know what a great player he was - but I wish I could've heard him on the radio! He butchered the English language - a la Yogi - and kept people's attention since one never knew what he was gonna say.

Dean worked for the Cardinals ('41-46), the Browns ('41-48), the Yanks ('50-51), the Atlanta Braves ('66-68) - and with ABC and CBS.

One quick story - he was doing the "Game of the Week" for CBS and said over the mike - "I don't know why they call this the 'game of the week' - there's a much better game on NBC between the Dodgers and Giants."

A batter swung at a pitch way outside the strike zone: "he shouldn't hadn't ought-a swang!"

Now to the game - it's a game of chance using two plastic roulette wheels.

image

The board opens up to resemble the baseball field and then the roulette wheels are set up on it. One wheel for the pitcher and one for the batter - hitting a homer is gonna be tuff! The instructions are on the back of the lid.

IMO - simple games of chance quickly gave way to the more sophisticated games where statistics are used to play the game - of course - which one someone enjoys is a matter of taste.

The games that are endorsed by major leaguers are a favorite of mine!

Cool item, especially with a very popular player.
  • Always great to look at your board games - Stone.

Nice looking board games. They may not have great value, but you sure don't see them much. Great color.

As for Dizzy Dean, my memories of him are with Pee Wee Reese and the Game of the Week. The Diz was always advertising Falstaff beer. And, I'll never forgot his pronunciation of Tito Fuentes as "Titto Funts."

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

Thanx for the kind words guys!

Steve - in this case - I hope - down the road - to bid on a nrmt version that's complete - tho I will have to be ready to fork out some coin. Would be nice if I could keep it in the 350$ range?
