1965 and 1968 Topps Willie Mays

Just noticed they are the same pic. Kind of a far gap from 1965 to 1968 but didnt know that topps did that with this big name player. Were they just lazy or why did they do this? What if topps did that with every card from 1965 and 1968 would the sets have a difference in popularity as they do now?

Topps did this with Mays' pic in the 1966 and 1969 Topps sets too.

The Musial image from his '62 card was also the B&W inset one from his '60 card. I'm glad, because it's a fabulous photo, but they were really pretty lazy in those days. The '69 set has a ton of retreads to go along with the Mays that Rich mentioned.

I think some 55 and 56's have the same thing, in fact it has happened more than you think.

Team cards are notorious for this.
    Good for you.

overheard at spring training in the late 60's........

    Photographer: 'Scuse me, Mr. Mays?

    Say Hey Kid: What?!

Photographer: I just need about 5.......

    Say Hey Kid: No.

Photographer: ......seconds of your time. Eh, they got photos. Hey McCovey!!

That sort of thing would really bother me if I was putting a player set together! image

The worst retread photo has to be the back of Curt Flood's 1971 Topps card, which was the same picture as his 1958 rookie card. 13 years went by, and they didn't have another photo to use?
  • this has happened to Yaz as well
