<< <i>When you base your purchase(s) on photos from an online source, you get what you pay for. There is an option on eBay auction and BIN listings for you to ask the seller questions before you place a bid or purchase the item, such as do you have larger clearer photos of the item as I think I see something I want to be sure of before I bid/buy. >>

One of the secrets of cherrypicking is not letting the seller know what you know.

  • I agree. It was unfair for you to have returned the item for the reason you stated .

I can certainly understand your point of view. But... with their return policy, you probably should have not called, but should have just returned the coin. Then I suspect there would not have been any problem whatsoever.

You need to remember, from the seller's point of view. Ebay is NOT friendly to the sellers... the system is somewhat stacked against them, and buyers can really make it miserable for sellers, even with the very good sellers. Just read the frequent threads here on the forum of the hassles and nightmares some seller have gone through with bad buyers. So it is no wonder that if a seller sees any signs that a buyer may turn out to be a problem in the future, they very well may block just to preclude that possibility. Looks like you may fall into that category... you may have been pegged as a 'fussy' buyer and they feel there may be more problems in the future and they do not want to put up with the hassle.

So... just move on. There are plenty more sellers on ebay. If you feel you REALLY want to continue buying with this particular seller, call them up again, apologize for the perceived hassle, and ask to be allowed to bid again.

  • You still have a chance at a high grade submission, though I am by no means a grader. MS-65 goes for decent money, though it could be more cost than it's worth.

I have purchased coins off Ebay with the "hopes" it was a rare one. Just not for that high an amount.

I had a similar incident a few months back bought a 98 WAM so called. and got a 90 cent. They said did i get what i expected i said no. they asked if i wanted to return it and i said no its a 3.00 mistake i made that now hangs on my wall. I dont even spend my .01 coin cause i want to be reminded why you dont bid on bad pictures The seller seemed somewhat confused

    << <i>

<< <i>They did not advertise the coin as a variety.

metalsman : I DID NOT IMPLY THEY WERE DOCTORING PICS !

Whats really the difference if you have a no question return policy,
Maybe I just didn't like the coin once in hand.

I tried to be up front with them and told them that the pics were deceiving and it looked to me like there was doubling in the pics.

    Mark >>

Maybe it was the statement about thier pics being "deceiving" that made them block you just a thought >>

You returned the coin because the seller didn't represent the coin the way you saw it?
And you thought they purposely misrepresented the coin in a photo to get you to buy it?
I don't believe there's a way to write a return policy to cover all that, is there?
I wouldn't block or at least, put you on phone orders only, because
I would ask and make it clear what the coin is and it's not and what your intentions are.

Actually, it cost them in packaging, handling, inventory control and now relisting. Most folks whine and cry if they they have to pay $3.00 in shipping charges which cost a seller $5.00.

Every cancelled transaction costs something. >>

Not to mention the listing fees which are lost.

You may be done, but we're not.

Somebody tries to pick me and returns the coins because they were wrong, I maybe let it slide. Depends if they're at least nice about it.

I offer 100% no questions asked returns, but that doesn't mean I don't block those who return items - especially if they're idiots, or they make me believe that they'll be a PITA.

EBay isn't an approval service - it's an auction venue. IMHO they have every right to block you, and leave you blocked.

    Point Made, Lesson Learned.

I thought if I was honest with the seller and not lie about the return it would be ok.
Apparently its better to say nothing.

I would block you too and in fact have blocked several people like you. It has happened a few times on 78 8TF Morgans that people wanted a chance to attribute in hand and return when they were not a better variety.

How do you figure? They had to ship it, deal with you, and then process a return. All for nothing. Why do you think that is not a "cost?"

I live a few miles from this dealer but have not been to their shop for many years. They do not like cherrypickers and convey that bias very clearly. That said, if I think I see a doubled die on the internet and find out I'm wrong I "eat" the coin as a rule. I try not to make mistakes. My misinterpretation is not the fault of the seller.

There is only one very minor doubled die known for the 1913 Variety One nickel. It can be seen on the eyelid. What did you see on the coin you returned that led you to believe that it was a doubled die?
  • pontiacinfpontiacinf Posts: 8,915 ✭✭

<< <i>I would have to agree. If you bought a coin from me and then called me to tell me you wanted to return it, because it was not the doubled die you hoped YOU cherrypicked, I would probably block you, too.

As a cherrypicker myself, if I buy a coin on eBay that I think is a nice variety, and I get it and it turns out NOT to be what I thought, I stillkeep the coin. It was my fault, not the sellers. If the coin is as described, I see no reasont o return it. You, on the other hand, should really reconsider your business practices in this regard. >>

yeah id block ya too-whats your ebay handle?

the sellers was right to block based on the information. I myself have no patience for bidders like this. They make it bad for legitimate buyers the under bidder lost and the seller lost. Good addition to the blocked bidder list.

Has happened to me after returning a coin from an Ebaydealer I dealt with for 20years even before Ebay .
The coin was very polished with no mention of it and the photo looked great. Doctored maybe?
An Experienced dealer, he knew what it was, or he has inexperienced coin people running the Ebay business.
They Blocked me their longtime customer, even with the stated return priveledge.

Another dealer blocked me after one return of a first purchase.. He has some nice coins listed with great photos , but nobody bids, or does buy nows!
I wonder why. He has relisted those coins a dozen times.

I don't need him to buy coins , those that know me offer me coins.

Move on to other friendly dealers.

You should be happy this dealer blocked you. That's a win-win in my book. Plenty of fresh fish still left in the sea. Carry on.
