Coincidence? I Think Not . . .

These Pro Star Promotions are pretty hard to find. I bot a bunch on ebay a while ago to get graded and they just popped.

They were not high grade by any stretch -- I expected grades between 4 and 6 -- possibly a 7 or two.

1 1 18473213 VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT 4 1972 PRO STAR PROMOTIONS JUAN MARICHAL Card US

Do you have any pre grading scans we can look at?

Sorry, no scans -- and I suppose it's possible that they are all 4s -- but there was certainly some disparity in the condition of the cards.

I just found it odd that 9/9 were graded PSA 4 -- I would challenge anyone to sub 9 vintage cards and have them all grade the same.

It probably would make for an interesting contest -- Sub 10 pre-1975 cards (or whatever year deemed appropriate) -- and whoever gets the most to grade the same takes all. image

Wow Scott, I agree it would be almost impossible to repeat that again.

What a shame, someone did not take the time or put forth the effort as they are paid to do.

These are the scans . . . certainly harder to see now that they are slabbed. The only issues I see are with the corners.
Each has 1,2 or 3 touched/dinged/worn corners -- nothing resembling rounding. The backs are blank.

  • Wow - those are refreshing to look at - the non-Topps photos are great.

Topps could also learn a thing or two about how to do an airbrush without it looking like a 1st grader with an eraser and finger paint ....

Too bad PSA took your money to slab those ... image

Wow, those are really nice. I have no clue how any of them are only a 4, sorry this happened to you.

Those are really nice to see -- thanks for posting the scans.

    Look like nice "4's" too.

I never say this, but I think Id question those grades with someone.

The way you describe them they should be 6.5's

    Sorry.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Thanks for posting these pics. The photo on the Marichal is particularly sweet.
  • Those are some sharp cards! Having all grade a psa 4 ... someone might need to review them again. That is too bad

Even McCovey is mystified at these grades...

LOL!!!! I would like to buy the McCovey if it is for sale!! That pose says it all!

PS - I find that hard to believe they are all the same grade. The corners on some look better than others as well as the centering....I felt the exact same way when SGC graded my Mutoscopes. Could it be they are unfamiliar with the issue and took the easy way out?

    There's an '8'.....not much difference?
  • Look at them at an angle... Are you sure there are no "spiders" on the card from cracking? I see this with '51 Red Backs as well, card looks like an 7/8 but there are some 'spiders" which drop the grade... That might be the case here as well.. (Note I am not familiar with these promos.)

Good possibility. These didn't all drop to the same grade because of something like corners; these likely all got the same grade due to some surface issue that spans the whole lot. It's the most likely reason for cards that nice to drop that far IMO.

    Scott,

Thanks for sharing the scans! Like stated below, unless there is something not plainly visible, it seems odd that all of them would grade a 4. It does seem to me that PSA is a little harder on grading the odd ball cards over the regular issue cards. JMO

The cards look like they were once held in place with photo corners and left marks or impressions and probably the reason for the rubber stamping grade of 4.
  • tod41tod41 Posts: 96 ✭✭✭
Very often the back of these cards will have staining, yellowing or tape and glue marks which would affect the grade. Love these cards.

Unless there are some other issues (surface, reverse, etc.) that I don't see, here's what a PSA 4 should look like:
... (as far as I'm concerned, yours are much better for sure!)

Don't have them in hand with a loop, but it's just hard to find a reason these are 4's. Hopefully a resub will find someone having a better day! great looking cards regardless.
