If your collection were sold at auction today...

MidLifeCrisisMidLifeCrisis Posts: 10,563 ✭✭✭✭✭
...how would your collection be described overall? What would the cataloger highlight as the best attributes of your overall collection?

In other words, does your collection have a specific focus? Are you working towards some specific goal? Have you reached that goal to some degree? Or would the cataloger choose to highlight things about your collection that are different than what you're trying to accomplish?

When we think of big-name collections that have been auctioned (Eliasberg, Norweb, Garrett, etc.) they all had similar attributes: completeness, high grade, major rarities in all areas of federal and colonial US coinage. The notable exception to that is John Ford's collection which was massive and covered a wide range of numismatic material, but which contained no federally issued US coins.

I was just thinking how my collection might be described and wondered if any of you have had similar thoughts.

    Lisa and I have sold four collections since 1998:

    Each of them had superb quality for the grade and were specialized between US Half Cents and Hard Times Tokens. Unfortunately, three children and home repairs forced us to sell them.

    I think that many of the very comprehnsive collections sacrafice the quest for high grade and focus somewhat on "filling holes". I know in my modest gold dollar collection that I have a few pieces higher graded than Harry Bass did but the completeness of his has mine overshadowed by a country mile.

    His eBay acquired U.S. type-set represent a collection of high-grade Chinese coins unequaled in recent memory. The collection also contains a few genuine coins that a semi-competent blind man could tell were cleaned, whizzed, polished or artificiality toned (sometimes all 4). Collection would be most useful as a warning to others...

    The Ten Foot Pole Collection was lovingly assembled over many years by a wealthy midwestern physician who dabbled in many numismatic areas but always came back to his one true passion - DOGs (Dirty Original Gold).

    A middle-of-the-road collection assembled from a young, enthusiastic, and ambitious collector with an

    My collection would be described as adhd has is has no real focus and havig characteristics that can best be described as being idiot -savant cause many of the coins both foreign and US are knockouts. That is of course after you subtract the dreck I accumulated too.

    As described for a recent ANA auction......common coins were described thusly;

    << <i>a glorious example of this common coin, common in AU and baggy Unc., but this piece is amazing: fully struck with gorgeous satiny luster, nearly perfect surfaces, and best of all deep iridescent gold color, making for outstanding eye appeal. If you want a great one, this is it! >>

    and, coins for the ages;

    << <i>Pristine Gem Uncirculated, bold strike, splendid sea-green and golden mauve iridescent toning, essentially perfect technically but the eye appeal also is astounding.......This coin is worth a runaway price as the single finest of its date, and perhaps of its type. Once sold, you will probably never have a chance to buy another one like this. >>

  • A modest survey of gold type coins highlighted by the beginnings of an Indian quarter eagle set, including the signature piece of this set, a 1911-D quarter eagle, NGC graded AU55. Additionally there is a substantial accumulation of modest Morgan and Peace dollars, including a raw 1921 Peace dollar with an above average strike, that should grade at least MS63. There is an additional assortment of miscellaneous crap, including some items that were graded out of boredom.

    A complete collection of Lincoln cents accumulated over nearly the past 5 decades. Much of this set has been off-market for at least 10-20 years. Includes most significant varieties, lacking only the major doubled dies. Many of the early keys are PCGS encapsulated. Much of the set remains raw, but has been selected both for strong technical grading and outstanding eye appeal. Some of the early dates may be considered to have "questionable color" by current third-party grading standards, but all appear to exhibit natural toning. Most of the early dates will grade from AU to low MS, with the dates from 1930 on all in mid-to-high MS Red grades. Additionally, there are two lower-grade matte proofs, a number of proofs from the 1940s and 50s, and a complete proof run starting in 1956.

    And some other junk too.
