What type of toning do you prefer?

I prefer subtle toning... basically, a white coin with very light gold, rose or blue toning (or combination) or a copper coin that is brown with very light rose or purple toning (or combination). I'm still traveling, but will post some coins with this type of toning when I get home. I want to see the details of the coin and some very light color for contrast.

I was looking at some toners at the SLNA and some were so heavy that you couldn't see the detail. Several of the dealers would describe the coins as MS67 toning, MS68 toning, etc. The "coin" had MS64 or MS65 detail, but I understood what they were saying... don't buy the coin, buy the tone!

  • I too prefer subtle toning, but the coin doesn't have to be white. A few of the most
drool-worthy coins I've seen have been very dark, such that on first glance they
just look like black silver. But under the light, you can see a colorful luster shining
    underneath the darkness.

Black and white "CircCam" toning if the coin is lower grade.

Light, subtle toning in pastel colors and a "target tone" pattern if the coin is high grade.

Ask me again tomorrow and my answer could change, but probably not.

Ditto. I hate splotchy mottled toning and dark colors.

I don't trust the ones with the fancy colors.

I know one thing and that is that I have never gotten an offer from PCGS to buy back any coin that I have ever posted here because it was doctored or AT'd.

    Subtle rim toning for me.

I don't trust monster toning, nor my ability to decipher its color progression as well as with rim/album toning.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

I prefer attractive, natural-looking toning, in earthtone colors, with smooth transitions, and a balanced overall appeal that is commensurate with the grade

I dislike uneven, spotty or blotchy toning patterns, and really don't care for the bright neon pinks and electric blues that seem so popular with some collectors

It really depends on the coin; i.e., I can't say I prefer only 1 or even 2 kinds of toning. I prefer coins that have attributes indicating originality. Within that context, I like many types / varieties of toning.

Pretty much agree with the above................I like this type of toning on WQ.

The trivial answer would be "attractive toning", but that definitely encompasses more than simply random colors and patterns.

I prefer natural toning and it really looks good on nickel. We usually do not consider the lowly nickel, but rather silver. Orange on gold is my most favorite.

I prefer toning some expert calls, "NT." If they call it, "AT," I hate it! That's how I collect. image

I don't like toning that is too thick. Pastels rims surrounding original mint colors. Here are two examples.

I enjoy the "wow" toners. Luster and rainbow toning that is.

I really like the toned nickels as well, they can tone up some of the best rainbow colors around with the perfect toning conditions.

I am partial to light pastel, or pearlescent toning if at all. Mostly I like no toning at all.

This one is really cool. My photo makes it look too dark. (The 69FB, 68+FB, and 68FB are not mine. I am thinking of having mine regraded and imaged by PCGS)

This one is MS67FB (my coin)

There is a whole group of these graded by PCGS (I found 11 with images, who knows maybe there are more)

    This one is MS69FB

I like all kinds. But most important is when someone is posting and they say TONED in the title. And say toned a few more times in their description, and mention TONED every chance they get. Even if it's ugly Heh heh. And, of course when a dealer says it's MONSTER toned and says I should buy it, that cinches it for me. image

  • depends on the coin type...

of all those posted, I like Lance's bust halves... for 1800's coinage, that's the look i love...

as for Morgans, I like some colorful rim toning w/ mostly white in the center... the crazy nuclear dripping wet monster toning is not my thing...

even if it's natural... it *feels* unnatural to me....
