Done with the US mint

I just got my uncirculated 2011 mint set - $37 shipped image . What a complete and total ripoff. I just cancelled all of my subscriptions. I am through with the Mint. image

What was wrong with the coins? I looked at a set at a local B&M and they looked pretty decent. I was aware of the higher prices.

Yes, the price is high...but if you want a 2011 Mint set, you're not going to find them any cheaper. From the few sets I've seen the quality is up to par.

Seems quality has been hit or miss this year (maybe every year).

I've read a lot of unhappy reports so far, however, mine looked really nice.

I've gotten garbage coins from the Mint, Ebay, the BST, Dealers, Coin ShowsB&Ms (these last as a newb-my fault totally) etc.
I can totally relate to your reaction slipgate.
But after quitting all of the above what's left? Stamps? Postcards?

Ironically, today I'm trying to get a picture of Proof dime with a dramatic die crack.
    Talk about quality.
Someone was asleep at the switch to allow a die like that to be used on proof coins in 1957.

  • I cancelled all my mint subscriptions last year. I was getting doubles of both unc and prf ASEs, mint sets, proof sets, and silver sets. If the numbers of mint subscription dropoffs last year was true that I heard of, they lost a lot of business. I'll decide what I want from the mint year by year. I'm sure they could care less about what one customer thinks of them.

I cancelled all my subscriptions also.

I will purchase on eBay for less.

I cancelled all my subscriptions after that fiasco with the proof eagles last year. I will pick and choose what I purchase from them from now on and it will not be what it used to be that's for sure.
  • Ever since they started charging for each shipment, subscriptions are a joke. I try to get all the sets I want at the same time. That $5.95 a pop shipping can kill ya!

That would be neat to see, can you supply a photo when you capture it?

    Thanks

The coins may not all be high grade
But it's nice to have the complete set all together
So I get a couple each year

Just to be clear. I have no problems with the quality. What I have a problem with is paying $37 for $14 worth of coins that I could pick up at the bank. I don't think the packaging is worth $23! They have priced themselves out of the market.

I stopped last year. Prices are exorbitant. Cheers, RickO

buying the Proof and Mint Sets in the after-market is the best way to go. you can look at multiple sets if quality is the problem and often they will be cheaper a year or so after issue. a dealer will buy in bulk so his shipping charges don't affect re-sale. the problem is usually self-inflicted due to the desire to have these products at the soonest possible date.

    just be patient and wait.

Good point. There are so many NCLT's in these sets you could not duplicate the mix at ANY bank.

What is an "NCLT"? I don't understand why you wouldn't be able to pick these up at a bank. They are just dollars, quarters, nickels, dimes, pennys. Are you saying these coins are not intended for general circulation and distribution?

  • Non-Circulating Legal Tender = NCLT. Proof strikings, satin finish, commemoratives, bullion issues, pucks certainly. Half dollars and dollars, in practice. Also, some collectors demand original, complete, pristine mint packaging.

In the current year's offerings should be able to get 2 cents, 2 nickels, 2 dimes, 10 quarters through normal banking channels - and apparently this year the striking of the mint set coins is considered to be the same as the commercially circulating coins.

Where do you live? My shipping was only $4.95 this morning.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
