Just a quick observation of board traffic

I've been on CU for 7 yrs now - the time has flown!

Of interest - there's only 8 threads with today's date - Feb. 15th.

I don't think I've ever seen so little traffice - in general?

Has anyone else thought about that?

edit: now up to 10 - 11 if ya count mine.

Mike, it seems lately there's more thread traffic when flame wars are going on and other stuff gets resurfaced.

if there are only a few, but the quality is there, then it's worth a look......plenty of folks still come around to boast or share.

and pitchers and catchers are reporting. image

Maybe people started using the search feature before asking questions that have been asked 100 times. And of course all of the good OT threads get poofed, locked or are continued on CBT. And just to keep somewhat on the topic of cards.....anyone remember this guy?

over the past year or two i have noticed a real exodus of some guys who used to be consistent contributors. some have turned their attention to cbt, while others just disappeared altogether.

for awhile there it was nothing but arguments and the like. things seemed to have settled down and while the number of posts has definitely declined there is also less acrimony in my opinion. hopefully some of the "good guys" will return.

The volume had to subside significantly once Minty, Bill, and Randy, left. The latter had really high posting counts, maybe like 1/2 the posts of Steve. image

I think some folks were likely spooked by those crazy ku klux klanta klaus pics.

I notice from time to time the traffic is light here, and other times it's very active. No rhyme or reason to it.

I think if Steve left, comments and page views would drop off a cliff; that is, unless Tommy decided to take us on another wild ride through a day at the office (and in the company car?) of C7.

  • It is actually peaceful here with the exodus of the dudes that lived here wreaking havoc. Let them enjoy their own CBT board. At least they are don't attack anyone new here anymore, which caused most of the churn. I am sure they sleep together peacefully after talking to themselves all day with the power they have on their own board. Just think, the power of one's own message board.. KING OF THE KITCHEN ! This is at least a legit huge friggin company public place unafraid of mcoking people, then runnig scared when they get mocked.

(it ain't much fun watching things there, same old)

I think the traffic has slowed becuase the guys throwing stones are gone and lets face it those threads get a lot of heat back and forth and drive up the number of posts.

Ron said he has witnessed seasonal traffic and since the general interest on these boards are baseball cards I would suspect if his observation is true which I would have no reason to doubt; then in a few weeks the action will return once the season gets near.

Having fun poking at each other is one thing but hard core personal attacks are simply not needed when many do not even know each other in real life. Internet cruelty is really stupid and does no one any good.

I for one would like the number of threads to pick back up as I enjoy reading and posting but it has been a lot more civilized on here the past few months which I enjoy more.

You guys haven't mentioned the biggest reason traffic has subsided...it's the same reason that I'm a far less frequent poster...the economy stinks. A lot of people have lost the discretionary income to collect cards. I had to sell most of mine. Now I spend less then half that money collecting autographed cards. It's almost certainly the economy that has hurt traffic.

I agree it is rather slow here of late...by contrast, though, the coin board is like Grand Central Station...

Grand Central is not a Station.

    It's a Terminal.

  • You know this is the first time I have come over from the Coin Forum in a few months now. Why? Every time I posted to a thread I was attacked called stupid, insulted. Why should I want to come here.

I was going to start an '81 set of Donruss in PSA 8, 9, and 10. I was told it was a waste of money to spend $3000 on a $20 set.
    Remember it's my money.

Not everyone over here falls into the category of rude and mean, but enough do that it was just no longer worth my while to even visit here.
There are some very nice people on this Forum. I received quite a few PM's from members wanting to sell PSA 81 Donruss cards and offering their help.

Same here. My industry continues to take more and more projects out of the state and out of the country, which doesn't allow me to buy collectibles any more. I think I haven't bought really anything in over a year. Sadly enough I've actually downsized my collection too. I still check out the boards every once in a while, but its not a priority to me.

Grote, yes I have, from those that know the difference. lol

I usually work midnight to 7AM so don't get to post during that timeframe. I am off tonight so will try to stay up. See you all then!! al.
  • I've been lurking more than posting for quite a few months now. Things just got too contentious on here for awhile. Feel free to call it thin skin or whatever, but I work my tail off for 10 hours a day and I read the forums for leisure. I still read regularly (not regularly enough to have gotten into the last couple of rips), but my last new thread here left a sour taste in my mouth.

I started following FCB and there were more posts about collecting over there (and way more rips) and quite a few of the guys from here.
Still working on my PSA Nolan Ryan set & PSA Albert Pujols set.

Funny you started this thread, I noticed a steady dip in activity on these boards over the last 24 months or so - or should I say, it's when I started to notice a dip - it might have been there already. I don't post a whole bunch, but I do visit and read - then post on the threads I am genuinely interested in. It'll be interesting to see who responds to this thread, what they have to say and how many hits it gets.

I agree with the sentiment that the economy is the major factor on board traffic. Disagreements, trolling, abusive posters, etc have been a fact of life on message boards since they began. I don't think it's any worse or any better than it's ever been. Some of the worst culprits have been shown the door, but that doesn't mean they've gone away, y' dig? Sure it's chased some people away, which is unfortunate. The lack of spending money definitely chases people away from the boards. If they aren't actively obtaining new stuff for their collection or have had to sell their collection, why stick around a message board that at times will haunt them (can't buy) or tempt them (spending money they really shouldn't).

My personal card budget has gone down massively - up until a couple years ago I didn't bother to count the cost of what I collected. If I saw a card that I needed, I pulled the trigger. Now I can't afford to spend like that, which in a way is a good thing. I now pass up graded Butlers that before I wouldn't have hesitated to pick up. They'll either be there down the road, or they won't. Chances are that nobody else will pick them up, which means that maybe the 4SCs of the world will have them for a little less when I'm ready to make the move. I'm still trying to track down a few elusive modern cards, and for vintage cards I've been very choosy about what I'm willing to pick up. Fortunately I'm very close on a number of sets that I've been working on for years. That not only means I'm patient, but once I nail down those few remaining cards, I feel I've got the will power to be satisfied and not start new projects until things turn around.

Im sure theres a small segment of people like me. Most of what is talked about here is baseball, modern and vintage, which is cool. But I know very little about it, so I dont comment. I read almost daily to see if anything modern football is being discussed, but usually to no avail. But I am a little of a smart a** so a spoof every now and then gives me something to comment on image

    Hi Ron

I think the childish behavior of some has caused a handful of people to leave but with respect to behavior in general? I agree with your sentiment and would like to see everyone treated well. Having said that - I think this has more to do with the behavior on your side of the street than anything else: (ZERO tolerance)

I remember the days when I could log on in the middle of the night and could find lots of members posting to the boards. Especially when good ole' Randy was here............

I logged on tonight @ 1:00 AM PST and see there are 23 members logged on to the CU boards. Something tells me they might be coin collectors or members who never logged off.
