Is it:

While we're at it, how is it accented? I usually say Da-LON-e-ga, but I've heard Da-lo-NAY-ga...

I always pronounce it [DOLL' oh nay geh]. Don't know how Georgians pronounce it though.

The Cherokee named it Ta-lo-ne-ga which is pronounced "dah low knee gay" (means "golden"). It is now pronounced Dah-LON-a-ga by most people.

When the California gold rush began the assayer at the Mint, Dr. M.F. Stephenson attempted to dissuade Georgia miners from leaving to join the California Gold Rush. His oration gave rise to the saying: "There's gold in them thar hills."

I guess it depends on the individual. Some folks pronunce C R E E K as "creak" and others "krick". "wash" the car or "woorsh" the car? Maybe it's eether or is it eyether? Neether or Neyether? Tomayto or Tomahto?

That's exactly how the owner of Dalton Coins, Dalton, Georgia pronounced it with his Southern accent. But he was in the minority with his pronunciation.

    Thanks,

    da-LON-ah-ga

Having heard it pronounced that way countless times while living in Atlanta during the entirety of the 1990's, I assure you thet this is the common pronunciation.

There are several other cities and states that I have encountered with similar misunderstandings, for example:

    Kissimmee, FL is pronounced kis-SIM-mee
Nevada is nev-A-duh with the same "a" as in "cat"
    Colorado - see Nevada
    Verdi, NV is called VER-die
and don't even get started on variations of names from the Northeast, like Glocester

There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.

In western New York there's a place called Chili. The locals pronounce it CHI (like the Chi in "China") plus LIE. Somewhat rhyming with jai alai. It's the darndest thing.

Not far from there is Charlotte, New York --- pronounced Shar - LOT.

Don't even get me started on Irondequoit.

    Bingo.
  • Just call the Mint museum in Dahlonega and ask. Or you can just pay them a visit. Very neat museum.

And on topic, my pronunciation for Dahlonega is: d-i-r-t-y g-o-l-d.

I'm a native Georgian, lived there and SC my whole life. While I was there, I lived less than 2 hours from Dahlonega.

This is how we pronounce it.

I'm originally from New York City. In lower Manhattan Houston St. runs perpendicular with Canal St.. North of Houston St. is Little Italy, south is Chinatown.

Non-New Yorkers refer to Houston St. as Houston St., like the city in Texas. Those of us from New York refer to Houston St. as house-tin street. I'd bet if you asked a New Yorker where is Houston St. ( like the city in Texas ) he'd have no idea what you're talking about.

  • Lived in Warner Robins, GA years ago. It's in Houston County - Pronounced HOUSE-ton.

I always joked, "Oh, after SAM HOUSE-ton of Texas?"

When I first moved to Seattle (Kent, WA, actually) my new workmates inquired which route I took coming in. I really embarassed myself trying to pronounce "Puyallup".

Never got it wrong again, though.

    Edited to add..
Oh, and ... I had friends that lived in Conyers, Ga which is near Dahlonega. They all pronounced it "da-LON-eh-ga".
