How is gold jewelry with diamond chips bought?

Is there any value to them (and other small semi-precious stones) or are they just removed and the gold weighed?

Unless one is making jewelry items to sell, little
diamonds have almost no cash value.

At the pawn shops, $1.00 a point for diamonds
under a carat is a generous offer.

Not really. My daughter has a small box full of small precious stones including rubies, emeralds, topaz and even small diamonds. My dealer gives them out to kids after removing them from the scrap jewelry. He told me he used to get some money for the small diamonds by the bag for industrial use but since everyone seems to be scraping the price has come way down on them. I dont what size bag but he told me that on small diamond chips he used to get $100 a bag but now it is around $20.

I have a hard time believing that a $75 offer on a 3/4 carat diamond would be considered "generous". Of course, I have no experience selling diamonds to pawn shops either.
