    I melted about $1.30 in coin silver once. Poured it into a mold, and the resulting bar had a distinct copper layer on top, with the silver underneath.

    There are other substances you have to put in the mix when smelting to seperate the gold from the other junk to get that slag off to be left with pure gold.
