Byron Reed Robbery - Feb. 9th...

...1907.
image I found this while googleing recently and have asked current and past curators of the collection about it and there aren't any records pertaining to what was stolen or what, if anything, was ever recovered. I guess this is a lesson in why housing a collection of this sort in a public library wasn't a good idea. Speculation runs pampant as to what coins, etc., were pilfered, switched or outright stolen while the collection was on display in drawers for library patrons to see, hold, touch, etc.. Can you imagine being able to walk into your public library, go up to the top floor, open a drawer in a display case, pull out an 1804 dollar and look at it? Unbelievable, but it happened.

With soil build-up, they might be 8 feet under by now.

In 1907 some coin dealer got a good deal on some nice collector coins that walked in off the street.

That is probably what happened to them. Unlike today back then most average folks knew about collecting coins. I would imagine most people today don't realize that coins are even collected.

Being that dumb I'm surprised the library didn't lend them out like books. Of course, upon the presentation of a valid library card. image

What I find interesting is that there doesn't seem to be any records as to what was taken. It's hard to believe a collection like that wasn't cataloged before it went on display.

Many of the Byron Reed coins were probably used as upgrades by a few thieves and then coveted. I doubt if they ever walked into any shop until after the death of the thief. Then, the wonder coin ended up in a great collection to be sold at auction later. That coin would only be traceable back to the thief or the dealer if a record of purchase or sale was kept. The crook could have been the dealer, who knows. Doubtful if anyone will ever know. Jmo.

Those coins are likely in some unsuspecting collectors SDB right now.... no way of knowing. Cheers, RickO

Many modern institutional coin collections are poorly documented. It's due to shortage of funds and lack of a broad base of interest.

Even if catalogued, the curators may not be numismatically sophisticated enough to write competent descriptions.
