Ever been totally blown away....

I've been working on my 1792-1964 type set with gold now and was at #5 with no hope of going to #4. When, out of nowhere, a new set is registered that is soooo much better than mine that you just want to give up? Check out my set and then check out this person whose initials are "pcm". His set is easily $350,000 over mine. So much for being on the first page...

    Tom,

I saw this guy too. I am finding the Type coins to be a real pain to find, even the cheap ones I can afford. I picked up 4 coins, 3 Seated and 1 Gold dollar at a show last weekend, all in to PCGS for crossover, but most dealers had Morgans or 20th Century stuff. The only dealer who had any real early Type has stuff I couldn't afford, although it was cool to hold a $3 Gold in PR-66.

New guy has some interesting choices in coins. Looks like the set was started at one point, and then started in earnest. Buffalo nickel T1 in MS-63 and a population 2/0 $2.50 Classic Head in MS-65 in the same set. Would be intersting to see what the goals for this set are. Mine are AU-58 or better until it becomes prohibitive, then work my way down until I can find a grade I can afford and not mortgage anything.

The guy to watch out for is going to be #9. He's got a Chain cent in 65BN and a Wreath cent in 66RB. image

Next time he guys on a buying spree, that will end my chances of ever being on the front.

I've often wondered about sets like #9. Who has a Chain cent in MS65 and a $4 Stella in PR65CAM and a 1799 Bust Dollar in MS64, yet also has a 1921 Peace dollar in AU55 and a 1917 25¢ in MS63FH and a Mercury dime in only PR65? Why aren't the other coins of better quality. It's clear the collector has the financial means to buy better examples, so why didn't he? Did he just pick those up for the hell of it because they are part of the registry or do they have some special meaning to him? Does he have any interest in them?

      gmarguli,

No I'm not only interested in the registry set, although it does give me some incentive. My point is is that his set is so great! His set is what I'd like to strive for. Yes, I'm very happy with my set and it will slowly come along. I even have a 1900-2001 set as well as I want to get an example of every type, not just those ending in 1964. I've been collecting coins now for 31 years (I'm 40 now), and I enjoy collecting more than ever, and hope to continue. I just know that, unless the Lord is willing, I will never own any pre-1880 proof gold, any MS-65 early copper. The whole point of having money and working is to work on my type setimage

    6. Maybe that #9 doesn't like 20'th century coins and is just filling holes image

He does like proof though. I always wanted a proof Flyer.

Keith, this is truly an epic set. Nobody could fill it in a weekend, not even a proverbial Bill Gates. That is why I like the various subsets. TypeTone's idea of a basic set was a good one.

I found that 12 coin circulating gold type set. That helps. I need to get it to recognize my $10 lib, then one more to go. So that focuses me on a T3 $1 gold piece. I sure would like to fill out a basic set next.

tjkillian - I was enjoying that #5 spot for a while too you know image However it always seems like people buy faster than me. Oh well...
    7. I saw this set too. Very Impressive. I was tempted to get the Credit card and do a little charge-o-rama but then I took a deap breath and closed the wallet. His personal comment section indicates its been 40 years in the making. What also blows me away is for a few hundred bucks he can get some easy coins (Jeff nickel, Peace Dollar, Kennedy hald, War cent, memorial cent etc...). This is the way you build a set, get the hard one's first!! Finding the PQ type coins has been difficult!

Golly tj, you call THAT pathetic?????? WOW!!!!! I enjoy the registries, but have no dream of even making the top 10 but that doesn't mean I can't put together the best, nicest set I can, and drool over the guys who have the financial wherewithall to get the super stuff. image I get tickeled when I can scarf up on some of their measley MS63/64 upgrades, or even an AU upgrade every once in a whileimage

    9. This brings up somthing that a lot of you registry chasers may not have thought of. I admire your desire to obtain high end quality coins for your collections but do you really think because you are in the top 10 in the registry that you are really even in the top 50 of what's out there. There are many long time collectors that have sets that would blow your socks off. They may be raw or NGC but don't you think that some people have collections worth $100-500,000 or more. Just go to a major show and look at some of the tables. I'll bet there are some "top 10" sets sitting in cases that the dealer doesn't bother to register.

Again I don't want to be a rainmaker but give credit to the many collectors who have spent 30-40 years and $50,000 or more on thier collections. There are a lot of them out there who don't know or care about the registry.
    10. coynclecter - I heard that point on the other board. I'd love to see a table with enough coins to make a complete type set, never have. I don't go to enough shows and have never been to a convention. I'd just love to see several complete type sets layed out. Believe me I will be attending all local shows from now on...

But can one really expect to see the finest sets layed out at a convention? If the sets were local maybe. How many would travel with their complete type sets? Gee if everybody would that would sure be some fun jamboree, please invite me!!

Sure PCGS is really stretching it to say these are the finest sets in the world. However they are pretty durn nice in my opinion. And I can see many images of great coins without leaving my office !!
    11. Come on down to Long Beach and join the fun. I always leave there humbled. I know they are not all complete but that's not required for the registry either.

I have seen a number of collections in that past have been inherited or put together by the wealthy that are simply amazing. Remember there are over 1 million people in this country with a net worth in excess of 5 million dollars. If 1% of them put 5% of their wealth into coins that would be 10,000 collection worth a quarter million or more.

They are out there, many raw.

Also look at some of the dealer sites and see if you can make a registry set from them. NGEgold.com for a gold type set. or "the mint" for copper.

I do agree the sets are nice and I do admire those who are working on them. Let's also give some credit to those who have been working on them for a lot of years without a registry.
    12. I am pcm and am sorry about your experience. Type coins have been a wonderful hobby for me over 40 years and i may get back into it. I get a kick out of this registry and it seems people are serious num ismatists. Best of luck.
    13. you are correct. I started at times with different budgets and may upgrade and fill in the holes. Problem is that other than the numismatic pleasure it seems like an awful investment.
    14. this is pcm and I got that coin when I was 19

      PCM,

Welcome to the boards. You have a great set and we will definitely enjoy your insights. Although we may appear "competitive," it is really all in fun for the most part. If you have a scanner of camera, please share some photos with us. I got a chance to see some proof gold at a recent show and was amazed with it.

    16. Thanks for posting PCM, and welcome! I'm going to buy a few coins this year for my type set but don't think I'll hit the 2/3'rds complete mark.

      PCM:

I'm puzzled by your comment about Numismatics not being a worthwhile investment. While I see that statement on these boards a lot I firmly believe that coins can and should be considered an investment for anyone putting serious money into them. And thousands of dollars per year is a serious amount. The right coins to buy are out there but it takes a good eye, good contacts, good knowledge and lots of persistence to snag them. You can have your cake and eat it too.

      PCM,

Welcome to the registry/message boards. While I do like competition, you are just a little out of my league. I do hope you post your pictures of your coins, as I should do. If you want to get rid of any of your "lesser" coins, please let me know as I do love the type set, as well.

      Best of luck,

      Tom
