Gold purchase breakdown

Now that I've sold all my graded Buffalo's I'm looking to buy 12-13 ounces of gold with the proceeds. Just curious as to how you fellow metal heads would break it down and why.

Probably 10 1-oz eagles, the balance in 1/4 eagles.

  • Stay with the gold eagles.

I would spread it out abut further and picksome up all the way down to the 1/10 size.

Why not Canadian Maple Leafs? Everyone seems to favor Canadian dollars of US dollars, so why not the same for gold denominated in those respective currencies?

I would stay away from maples. I called a coin store and asked for their buy price for a 1 oz maple and a 1 oz AGE. AGE - $16 over spot. Maple - $26 back. I like having a little foreign gold. I bought a pair of french angles (.1867 agw) for 3% over spot. Sovereigns (.2354) are nice as well. Heck, tried to find old US gold. Ex-jewelry pieces can be found for 3% over as well. I would avoid all buying all full ounce coins. Buy a half, quarter and 1/10 (or multiples there-of) Be patient and you can buy right. I just picked up a 1/10 AGE for $145 - free ship

But what were his selling prices? If the AGE was $42 over and the Maple at spot, then does it matter?

edited to add....I see APMEX has a $15 higher buy price for AGEs over Maples, but also charges $10 more. So its really only a $5 difference.

If just buying for bullion I'd still stick with AGEs and gold buffalos for resale later (higher premiums). I'd find the best deals on ebay and stick with non-proof one ouncers and quarter ouncers. If an MS69 can be had for the same money as raw always take the certified 69. You won't find any great prices on tenth ouncers but you may get lucky with the half ouncers.

  • Yes, the buy back for the AGEs definitely hold a nice premium.

My B&M was buying at 1365 when gold was at the recent low last week (I think spot was 1333 or so)

The premium is hefty on the 1/10 oz. but I really like the size.

Of course, you have to think about the future purpose. If this is strong money, and you are going to hold for an extended period (i.e. it will end up in the estate, or gift for kids wedding in 25 years) I would opt for the 1 oz. AGEs.

If you want to move in and out on the ups and downs I would say find a good place that buys decently and get the most gold bang for your buck.

I'll throw a kink in and say whatever Aussie stuff you can get closest to spot. Something about the down under gold is shinier to me, so sayeth my Roo anyway.

Get a couple of 1/10th AGE tubes. At just 9% over, you wont find them cheaper anywhere else!

It's difficult to get Australian gold for spot , perhaps the Kangaroo or nugget. I do agree however Australian gold is a solid investment , more so the lunar series which i collect due to the insane low mintages and premiums that brings.
I like the Canadian maples too , i like those 4 9's is what it is.

Good catch! No wonder it seemed like such a great deal...lol. Sell at 12% over.

Still my favorite seller for bulk.
