Do you wear glasses?

I've noticed, as I'm growing older, that my eyesight is failing me. image An unwelcome side effect is that it's getting harder-and-harder to see detail, even with optics. Another unwelcome side effect is my lack of visual clarity is causing me to become more impatient. In the past I would look at my change, now it's more of a chore than a habit. I would be able to attend a show, antique store, etc., and be able to walk briskly and gain an accurate overview of what was available in the booth. Now, I have to walk more slowly, tunnel into very specific areas of the booth and even then, I miss items in the booth. Do you share the same struggles?

I need glasses to see, but not to drive (wait, what?)

anyway, I don't need them to read, but I have noticed lately that my arms aren't long enough for me to read some books.

I need Dr. Edell specials (1.75x read glasses or higher magnification) or a loupe to see coins smaller than a quarter though.

I wear glasses, and I'm near sighted. That is actually an advantage for the coin hobby. I can see more stuff without a glass than most people can see with a glass. I usually look at coins with my bare eyes or a 10X for the close work.

Have you ever considered Lasik surgery? I have heard many positive stories about it and few, if any negative ones. Most people say it corrected their eyesight to 20/20 or better.
I turned 41 a month ago and I have noticed my eyesight isn't as sharp as it once was. I also work in IT and stare at a computer screen most of the day, which can't be good.
When and if my vision gets to the point where I need glasses or contacts, I am definitey going to look into Lasik as a first option.

I wear glasses but I'm not required to to drive. I first got glasses last spring, and had my eyes tested when I got my motorcycle license last summer. I was quite shocked that I passed the eye exam without my glasses, because I can't even watch TV without them, and the whole reason I got the glasses was that I was having trouble driving at night.

That being said, I don't think it affects my ability to see detail in coins at all... in fact it probably helps it quite a bit. image

I had LASIK surgery 10+ years ago and that solved one problem, but I still need reading glasses. I have probably dozens of cheap readers from 1-2 power. I use them with a loop usually and it makes up for all kinds of deficiencies. I need every edge I can get.

Prescription reading glasses. About the last 2 years. Pushing 50, that's to be expected.

50+ and no glasses; my long distance vision has diminished over the years but I can still see the mint marks on Merc dimes without magnification.

I had 20/15 vision until age 45. Then presbyopia caught up with me and today nothing is in sharp focus for my unaided eyes.

With my glasses I can enjoy coins and my other hobbies.

I can read a sign a half mile away, but I can't even read the date on a double eagle (so I definitely need 1.5X reading glasses).

Lasik can correct near sightedness (myopia) or far sightedness (Hyperopia), but not both. At some point in time, everybody needs glasses which usually amount to reading lenses due to presbyopia.

Yes and part of the problem is that as we get older we want to see more detail than as younger persons we just wanted to see it all.

I'm the same , but to the OP asking i'd say it's crucial to get the right glasses. If you need 1.25 x and use 1.5 or 1.75 you will soon need those , basically the wrong ones will ruin your eyes and theres no going back.

I'm very nearsighted. When I look at coins without my glasses, it's like I have three power built in magnification since coins can be held just a few inches from my eyes to see them clearly. It's great!!

just got reading glasses last year. the doc said 'yep, you have 40+ year old eyes'.

it is frustrating to have to inspect change, rather than glance at ...
but using the reading/magnifiers makes the inspection better.

I wear eyeglasses to correct my nearsightedness. I replace my regular eyeglasses with dedicated computer eyeglasses whenever I am looking at the computer monitor. When I read, or look at anything closely like coins, off go the eyeglasses.

Computer eyeglasses are great. I would not be without them.

My glasses are about 130 years old. Little, lightweight, gold frames and optics that by chance match the needs of my eyes perfectly.

Probably the biggest drawback in getting older is your eyes failing.

I find it MOST annoying when I am outside at night with my Meade AR-6 refractor telescope. It has a marvelous go to mount with a computer controlled database which will move the scope to find any object you wish. HOWEVER, the print on the little controller is this tiny little red led type. I need my glasses to read it. You do NOT need glasses with a telescope, the focus takes care of that. So, it on with the glasses, off with the glasses, on with the glasses etc etc.

I pity the blind. What a horrible thing.

I wear glasses. They do not affect anything that I do. I was a sponsored mountain bike racer. I have run marathons, snowboarded on half pipes and in the back country, flown in helicopters with the doors off, played with my kids, graded coins, done everything with glasses...even a half ironman(minus the swim...goggles have prescription in them) while wearing glasses. It is important that they fit well and are comfortable; with that, anything is possible. The only things I don't do in glasses: sleep, shower and Muay Thai Fighting...I think that about covers it. image

I have worn glasses since I was young. My mom remembers me saying when I first got them : "the trees have LEAVES!!". My eyes have always been that bad.... both with astigmatisms. I need glasses just to find my glasses! The few times I have fallen asleep with them on & had them drop to the floor have been almost comical events with me turning on all the lights, crawling around on the floor, sweeping my arms/hands along feeling for them.......

I noticed a few years ago that it was even harder than usual to read small print & most dates on coins as part of my favorite hobby. I started having to tilt & move my glasses on my nose. Computer glasses were a must at work**, where I spent much of my time on the computer. Age, I figured.

Then, almost a year ago, the retina in my left eye suddenly detached. Emergency surgery failed to save the vision. What vision there is is "macular off", which means no focus. At the same time, the eye doc did laser to reinforce the retina in the right eye. Since then, close-up vision in the right eye has been off as well.

To top it off, both eyes are also now developing cataracts. The left one has 2 types. They'll be doing surgery on that eye in a few weeks to continue to be able to see the repaired retina. Their hope is that, what vision I have left MIGHT be improved to 20/400 if I'm lucky. It'll be a few years before the right eye's cataract is ready for similar surgery.

What little vision I have left in my left eye conflicts with my "good" right eye to the point that I most often have to wear a patch over the left one (and get all the usual "pirate" jokes from people & stares from kids). My right eye is often tired/strained, and feels like it's looking thru "morning-eye".... where you blink & it gets cloudy & then clears up........

Looking at coins - - one of my favorite forms of relaxation - - is now more of a chore. I have trouble "concentrating" on any activity for very long, including coin collecting. My biggest fear now is that at some point, my right eye's vision will go & I will be left blind. I'm already having trouble picking my son out of the crowd when he's marching with the rest of the band at football games.....even thru the zoom of a video camera.....

One usually doesn't fully appreciate everyday things like vision until something like this happens.......

So........... if this were a separate post, rather than it saying "....post a pic of a coin with.....", it would be titled: "post a pic of a powerful loupe....." image

    - - Daveimage

(** to top it off, Monday is my last day at work. After 21 years of dedicated service, Verizon cut me loose as part of their endless, on-going RIF - - "Reduction-in-Force" - - program. Anyone have a job for an early-fifties, half-blind IT professional? image )

Iwear reading glasses when needed. Lately I have noticed I can't read the small wording on the TV screen. I guess it's about time to go see the optomertist. And I used to look for '72 double dies with my naked eyes.

I would be careful with that one. The last thing you want is to be on viagra and be without your glasses, could lead to a bad experience in the morning when you wake up next to something.
