..and my best gold find, a mourning ring from 1725:

I donated it to the national museum, so I no longer have it.
They did, however, give me a 'thank you' note which I've framed and put on the wall. image

Very nice Zot... and that mourning ring is amazing. I assume that a 'mourning ring' is a piece of jewelry worn in memory of a significant individuals death... was the inscription interpreted? Cheers, RickO

    Hi Ricko!

Your assumption is correct. I haven't researched this stuff in detail, but it's my understanding that wealthy families had these rings made and they were given as mementos at the funeral, presumably to close family/friends.
In the early 1700's very select few could afford to do this

Reading the inscription is very easy. It's plain Swedish and reads "E B K died 19 July 1725". Finland was under Swedish rule at that time.
What I found intriguing is that there looks to maybe have been another, older inscription under it. You can see some signs of this e.g. in the picture showing the inscription, and when looking at it in hand I remember those marks looked like writing and not just scratches/random marks.

Given that "E B K" must have been a person of considerable standing in the society, I think it should be possible to find out who he was (population of Finland/Sweden was small, and the date is exact).
I've thought about looking into this several times, but it seems I'm just too lazy.. image

Thanks for the feedback Zot.... would be interesting to see if there is a former inscription... a Scanning Electron Microscope may be able to pick that up.... Cheers, RickO

Gold finds? Three or four rings and a couple of little charms, but no coins. No pix either, alas.
