Met with a local dealer/collector today who agreed to sell me this lovely 1798 Half Eagle. This has been in his collection and was never offered to the public. The crust on this one is amazing! She is a little brighter in hand and still has nice luster. Thanks a ton for this one Jim!

Are you working on a date set, or is this a type coin?
Great coin overall, you did good

I owned an example of this variety many years ago. Those cuds on the edge get larger and larger over time. One old time cataloger said that, "You could spot them from across the room!"
We'll use our hands and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads.

Part of two different sets. First set I am slowly working on is a 1793-1807 type set. Second is a half eagle type set.

Yea, I worked on the 1793-1807 type set (plus the 1792 half disme, which I think is a regular issue, not a pattern) with just a smattering of the gold years ago. I just completed the half eagle type set, if you don't count the 1838 sub type at the last FUN show.
The quarter eagles are where the rubber really meets the road. The 1796 No Stars is hard to find in nice AU, and the 1821 to 1827 type coins have either been cooked to death in acid or look like the obverse has been through a meatgrinder.
This is what I have so far:
1793-1800 Type:
1793 Chain Cent
1795 Liberty Cap Cent
1798 Draped Bust Cent
1795 Flowing Hair half dime
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar
1796 Draped Bust Dollar
1798 Half Eagle
Half Eagle Type:
1798 Turban Head
1836 Classic Head
1880 Liberty
1892-CC Liberty
1909 Indian Head
The 1796 Quarter will be the tough one. Most likely I will pick up an example with a cleaning.

<< <i>I like that it still has some crust in the crevices of the lettering! >>

If it were raw, a toothpick would have come in handy!
Can't wait until you pick up 1798 Half Eagle with the Small Eagle reverse!

A problem coin will always be a problem coin
The right cleaned coin can, if stored properly, tone and become gradable.
