The 1955 DD cent. Modern, so many were able to see one, not especially scarce, dramatic hub rotation with wide separation. Also, it was something people could look for in their pocket change.
<< <i>1955 Double Die cent. It's the only error I'd like to own an example of. >>
Interesting ... hmmm ... I'd much rather own one of everything!!
It sure looks like the 1955 Doubled Die is the clear winner, here, folks, anybody else have nominations?
Personally I also like the 1817/4, more spectacular in a commercial than a literal sense. And I think the 1969-S is a close second to the 55 Doubled Die.
BUT ... we also haven't heard from any large cent collectors except the nomination for the 1801 Three Errors, a cool one for sure. I think the Starred Reverse is pretty spectacular too ...
<< <i>The 1873 DDO dime has even more separation than the 1955 DDO cent. I don't have a pic, but it is in the CPG. >>
Not to pick a disagreement but the 1873 is not even close. Sure it has some wide separation but only in the shield and banner. The 55/55 on the otherhand is nearly perfect rotated hub doubling with doubling occuring over the "entire" coin, not just an isolated spot.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

IMO, the '55 DDO without any question, with the '69-S DDO second.
I'd always heard that the 1958 DDO cent was spectacular, but have never seen one in hand. After looking at pictures, it needs one thing to match the two above -- significant doubling on the date. Link to PCGS press release on Stewart Blay's 1958 DDO cent

<< <i>The simple answer is to ask a non-coin collector what their opinion might be.

I asked my wife and her response was the 55/55. Everything esle had to be explained or pointed out.

You'll get the same response from most coin collectors.

Honesly, that just looks like some deep die polishing.
