neat pieces but they all seem too new to command such lofty prices. Lets say it took the artist 20 hours to make one.. and if you paid them 20 bucks an hour.. you are still only at 400 dollars for the commission.

Was it being the first from the artist the reason it was way over 400 dollars?
Or is my uneducated guess about how long it might take an artist to create one of these hobo nickels way off the mark?
I was just thinking in terms of a commission and how much i would be willing to pay based on guessing.
<< <i>Those look pretty cool... wonder if PCGS would slab them as Genuine coins w/ "altered surfaces"... maybe "tooling" instead?

I don't think it would be feasible to slab a hobo.

I contacted Ray Cover Jr and asked him if he would be interested in carving nickels for me. Commisioned. He flatly said, "no.". Too much work (time and effort) and the market couldn't bare the price. He said if time and energy were better directed elsewheres. He said three other fellows from this forum also contacted him. I think he thought we were kooks.............

I wonder what the chances are that these new hobo nickels we are seeing are computer generated designs as opposed to hand carved.I remember seeing a web site D.Carr is involved with dealing with this subject and offering the software to apply to particular engraving machines.
At the FUN on Sunday, I had one of the carvers do a hobo skull for me. It took him about 30-45 minutes and cost $20. If I can get my camera up and running I will try and post the pic.
