What was your first sealed case?

As im going to turn 40 this year, i've gotten back into the 80s a lot lately.

i started going to shows at least once a month back in 1983, always blowing all my money between singles and wax. it was so great back then. anyway, when 1986 Topps Baseball came out, i was at the local show and purchased my first "sealed case", a 3-box rack case. i carried it around like i just won the lottery! lol paid $50 for it and carried it home on the public bus (in nyc)

looking at ebay now, i'd like to pick up another one, but there are only 6-box cases :/ oh well

What was your first sealed case?

I bought a case of 1985 Donruss (in 1985) for around $250-275. Sold it the next year for $550, I think.

I opened a 3 box case of 92-93 Fleer Retail basketball. These were the rack packs that had the Team Leaders in them. There were a couple players that I only pulled 1 Team Leader in the entire case but I pulled 5 Michael Jordan Team Leaders.

My father bought us a case of 1981 Fleer baseball in order to try to get the "Craig Nettles" error card. We got 3 of them out of the case. Two he gave to his friends and one for us. Of course i traded it away with one of my friends. That was not a good day for me.

bought sealed cases of the 1990 Upper Deck 1st series football and also 1990 Upper Deck Hockey 1st series hockey. Took a bath on both in later years when prices dived like the stock market did a few years back.

My dad bought my brother and I two vending cases of 1984 topps BB. Opened one and made about 13-14 sets. The other is still sitting sealed in my closet.

1985 Topps Wax Baseball and then 1987 Sportflics

My dad bought both for me. First case I bought with my own money was probably 2008 Topps Series 1 Baseball.

    1985 Topps 3-box rack "case".

Up till then it was a pack here and there - I remember it vividly!

I believe it was about $50 - $60 back then.

It wasn't a case, but I bought three boxes of 88 Score Baseball from Sam's Wholesale Club for $10 each, which for a 14 year old was a lot of cash.

First case was 2001 UD Golf bought at a show in 2006 for $60. Pulled five Tiger RC's worth about $2 each and a golf shirt card of someone I've never heard of. Still have them in a shoe box ready to throw out when I get around to it.

  • I guess I have only bought one case. A 1988 Donruss Retail counter case. It is kinda cool as it has a big Dale Murphy standup thing. Picked it up 2-3 years ago.

Pawned a few packs on kids during one halloween so it is 80% full.

Mine was a 1979 topps rak case followed by a 1978 topps rak case in the early 90s. Other cases and boxes have come an gone but I still have those two. I can connect with those two years...

To this day I have never ripped a full case. The closest I have come was last year when a board member and I split a case of 86 OPC baseball.

My dad worked for Nestle in the 70's and had relationships with many of the candy jobbers. I was 15 years old and I saved some money up for my dad to get a box of 1975 Baseball cards for me. He could get them at wholesale prices but only went there every few weeks. One night he came home from work and told me he got me a box of 1975 Topps Baseball and it was in the back seat of his car. He gave the car keys and I ran out to his car and to my surprise, he had bought me a whole unopened case of 1975 Topps Baseball. I opened the whole case over the span of that year. I wish I had saved at least one box unopened. I was just a kid and loved my cards and I couldn't help but open them all. I will never forget that day.

My first cases were '89-90 Hoops and Fleer Basketball (did really well with these, sold them at or near their peak price by the box).

1989 Score Football set case, 24 sets, paid $200 in Aug. '89 (also did great with these on a set break around 1993 selling sets for $140 each at shows).

1989 Topps Baseball vending case (I still have this, using it to prop up other boxes). It's basically a vending case coaster at this point.
I thought Griffey JR. RC was going to be in this case. I was misinformed....I only paid $190 for the case. Cheap lesson learned.

Then I bought all kinds of cases in 1990 including those rare Score Football cases, Upper Deck Hockey foil cases, Skybox Basketball, Topps Traded Football set case with the Emmitt Smith RC.

So really a mix of junk and good cases in 1989 and '90. It soon got more complicated in 1991 with more and more products being released almost every week. You couldn't keep up with what was going to be the 'hot product' and what was the dog.

Best move I ever made in the hobby was in 1995 when I stopped buying all new products and focused on vintage only. But that's me.

I think you have to have a knack in the modern card case market and I clearly didn't.
