A fascinating watch (though quite long).

For those unfamiliar, he makes a solid claim that throughout history, it's a centralized non-governmental bank with the power to print money, and the necessity of the nation to borrow that money at interest, that causes inescapable debt of the people who are powerless to overcome that debt. He proclaims that government printing money itself, with no underlying debt, and outside of a non-governmental bank, is the answer to prosperity.

Considering what he's suggested: a debt-free money, controlled by the government rather than a Federal Reserve, could work. However, the elephant in the room is that the government has no ability to control its spending now. So I don't understand how they could keep from running the presses 'round the clock and spinning us into hyperinflation anyway.
We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last.

  • Places could choose to do business with us, or not. If his thesis is correct, it’s more about quantity than anything. So we the elected people, take over and print ourselves into balance again. Other nations can follow suit. I think his solution is a good one. The debt economy we’re using now has created amounts only obtainable by extreme servitude, loss of property, hunger, starvation and for what? So the fractional lending can continue?

Weiss is correct, Such a system would require too much self control from government.

A gold standard under such a scenario would make it at least harder ( though not impossible) for government to engage in military adventurism or misguided social programs.
