I was bored and looked through pocket change that piled up at home. Here are the results.

I spent some time looking through loose change that had been dumped into a jar over the past months at my home by the family.

The change included cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, presidential dollars, one Chucky Cheese token, numerous tokens from Knuckles Sports Bar and ...................................... a gold AGE quarter eagle image [how did that get in there!!!!!!!!!!!].

After segregating the AGE quarter eagle and the tokens I went through the rest. Here is the talley:

Cents - 792 total, all Lincolns

6 wheaties, 1917, 1940, 1940S, 1944, 1952D and 1956D (6/792 = 0.0075757 of the total were wheaties)

152 copper memorials dating from 1960 to 1981 (152/792 = 0.1919191 of the total were copper memorials)

16 1982 memorials [can not tell if they are copper or zinc]

618 zinc cents from 1983 through 2010, including 15 dated 2009, all Denver mint [6 with the capital building, 5 with the log cabin, 1 with young Abe sitting on a log reading a book and 3 with an older Abe standing in front of a public building] (618/792 = 0.780303 of the total were zinc cents).

No National Parks quarters from 2010

Halves - None

Presidential Dollars - 2

The variety of coins in pocket change today is very wide.

Cents through Dollars (six denominations, even though halves and dollars are not encountered often).

Cents can include wheaties, copper memorials, zinc cents and the new reverses of 2009 and 2010. The quality of these cents range from poor to outstanding. Some very beautiful and eye appealing cents, many in AU or MS going back to the 1960's can be found, many with nice multi color toning.

Nickels can cover 1938 forward, including some dog silver war nickels. Recent obverse and reverse design changes ad variety and finding nickels from the 30's, 40's and 50's can be a treat [have not seen a buffalo in change in a long time].

Dimes are clad only and mostly boring.

Quarters are clad only and include the 65-98 Washingtons [some of which are very hard to find nice, or at all]; and the Statehood, Territorial and National Parks quarters. Lots of variety.

Halves - rarely if ever found outside of banks.

Dollars - Ikes (on rare occasion), SBA's, Sacageweas, Presidential and one other design (different Indian reverses?) can be found at banks and in post office vending machines.

Not quite as enjoyable as collecting from pocket change in the early 60's was [silver, current series and older series going back to barbers, liberty nickels and indian cents].

Maybe in another 3 years I will get bored and do this againimage

The 1917 cent was an unusual find. Consider that the coin was struck more than 93 years ago.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • I think the amazing part of this thread is the fact that loose change survives in his house. Mine seems to dissapear with my family.
I can't even hide enough to go buy a news paper, much less sort through!

I searched a cent box yesterday, netted 11 Wheats, including a 1920. Last week I dug out a 1911 in a cent box. I think it is just amazing to think there are still 100 year old coins circulating.

Looks like it was a slow day at the office. Congrats on the 1/4 AGE! Where the heck did that come from?

The other stuff looks like it was fun to sort through. Some fun finds.

My next case [court hearing] is Monday. Had one yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that............

I spent a few hours late at night over 2 days going through the loose change. Everyone else was sleeping and I was bored.

    What can I say.

After paying for a 'round' on Thursday (dart night), when my change was placed on the bar (I always keep the 'change', and tip 'paper'...the change adds up quickly, considering change is mostly quarters), I heard that all too familiar 'ting' of silver. When I grabbed the change, there were TWO, silver Washies....both '46's (got 3 quarters back, 2 silver). Nothing spectacular, in the VG-F range. Once I saw two, I immediately asked the 'tender to kindly check the rest, as there didn't appear to be alot of loose change in the drawer (there were some rolls, but I didn't go that far, as the silver came from the loose change). She was very accomodating, and did just 'plop' the Washies and Roosies on the bar. Alas, no other silver. She did, however, get a 'fiver', on top of the tip she originally got. Thats about the 5th time since summer I've gotten a silver Washie in change....no Roosies at all, just Washies (not including the 5 silver coins, including a few Roosies, I've gotten 'dumpster diving' in the CoinStar machines).
    I'll come up with something.
