for those who have so graciously dropped by to hoist their opinions about how to piece out and maximize collections, this is the second time in recent memory that a member has posted a thread to crow about an incredible find, and it seems to me nothing more than a carrot being dangled in front of a hungry horse.
"Hey guys, look what I just found!"
"OOOO, ME ME ME ME ME ME!!!!!"
what does one expect? some of us are trained to respond exactly as certain folks here have done, as in, this is my business, it's how i make money and OF COURSE i will pursue a collection with the intention of acquiring it for the 40 cents on the dollar or whatever, it's what i do!
Muggyman, i just threw my hat in the ring BTW, i'm swimming in cash right now.
if you don't want to make a deal here, then DON'T tell everyone about it, otherwise expect the type of response this and any thread will get when someone unearths a good find.
the video was tough to watch.....honestly, it would take several hours, probably days just to properly analyze such a collection before deciding how to sell, but no matter what happens, somebody will piece it out because that's how the job gets done....it would make a lot of sense to slow things down a little and actually show off some of the key pieces to the collection, maybe next video eh? handle them with love and affection....... >>
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
I just love that 'dangling a carrot' line and it cracks me up. Keep dangling to me, I love watching this stuff! It's like going To a strip club, you can look all you want for free...but to touch them it's a lot of $$$.

some of them come for 40 cents on the dollar as well.
Great video and its fun to see the reaction to the grainy but fun shoebox video. My two cents:
1st cent: You should be handling this collection yourself. The cards need to be handled very carefully, and there may be condition issues that stem from how the owner stored the cards that you will have to fix right away. Or, if this person is handling the cards and doesn't understand the importance of not creating even the slightest damage in handling his cards, then he could unintentionally lose thousands just cataloging the cards for you. Imagine if he has 500 nm-mt to mint 1971 topps cards and rifles through them as if the value is in just having them. Also, you seem to be willing to put a lot of time in this to get it right, so he should give you free access to ascertain what is in the collection. I know I would want to inspect every last card, and use a loupe to inspect all potential $$ cards.
2nd cent: Don't get ahead of yourselves regarding value. The worst thing that could happen here is that his cards aren't in great shape throughout, and his collection isn't worth as much as he thought. Don't get his hopes up just because he has old cards. I know it is tough not to talk up this collection, but from what I saw I didn't see any mint cards. Don't get into a situation where he thinks you haven't helped him realize the true potential of the collection. Case in point, some of the cards you handled had prices on them, which I assume were the purchase prices. Just because he bought a Monte Irvin back in 1988 for $125 doesn't mean it is worth as much or more today.
great video...its gold...unbelivable..seems like i was watching a pack bust....love the east coast lingo

When people collect things for a long time, they have an emotional attachment to it. Most "collectors" have a degree of OCD, and you could hear tiny bits of it in his voice, especially when talking about the Gil Hodges card. He's going through his collection (aka life pursuit, in terms of money and time) and is probably thinking of all of the memories and money spent. He's also probably thinking about the investment he had when the card business was really booming. At least he has desirable cards and not all 1987 Topps.
Selling off someone's collection is a big emotional process. He might be better off piecing out some of the higher prices items and then selling the lesser cards in bulk. Do you really want to deal with 50-100 different buyers via the mail, especially with all the paypal horror stories we hear here?
Good luck with it. It will be a journey to say the least.
I'm really hoping the decision is to sell off the major items, sell the mid-60's to late 70's sets individually, and then bundle the later stuff. If I was doing this, I'd have a working plan similar to that until the specifics of the cards pushed me off that.
NOTE: I've never done it, so it's pure theory on my part.

One YouTube post offered good advice - consign to a major auction house. They sort, catalog and sell to the major buyers year in and year out. Take the time to grade the "good" stuff - stars and low pop cards.
Cards are now commodities based on grade. This gives the buyers a point of reference and secures the condition of the card.
There's an interesting series of videos of that guy Mr. Mint on YouTube. It shows how he goes to a guys house who has tons of cards like your friends. It documents how he sorts them out and buys the guys entire collection.
Can somebody that knows how post links to those videos so Muggy can see them cause I didn't know how.
Muggy, you might want to call in that Mint guy. He does pull out cash with him at the very end. He even took time to pose for a picture with the buyer!

I hope you are kidding and my sarcasm meter is broken. Mr. Mint is well know as a total jerk in this hobby. He will cherry pick the collection and try and convince you that the cards are not that great. Then he will offer you a lowball price. I wouldn't waste my time.
I got it all well under control, but I still love to see all the comments and suggestions and I've been bombarded (in a good way) with requests to get a shot at this collection. However, I did like watching Mr. Mint's videos though and inturn gave myself another nickname, Mr. Mug! Ok, let me divulge the meaning of my nickame Muggyman while I'm at it. My pledge name at college (when I had an awesome mullet) was................MUGSY! Since then, a lot of affectionate variations have come about and Muggyman (or Muglova, Muggylicious, Muggy, Mugs) has taken over - most people in NYC think Mugsy, Muggy, or Muggyman is my real name.
Anyway, this will all have a very happy ending for me and for everyone on this forum - take that for what it is worth, but get excited!
In summary, stay tuned Sunday - everyone will be filled in and another video will be shown of THE CLOSET!!!!!!!
Looking forward to it El Muggerino! One thing is for certain, you have the heaviest hands in the hobby when it comes to handling your cards and packs! Those thick plastic cases are going to get their money's worth on Sunday!

Mr. Mug. I like that name.
I agree with Aric. I would sell all the cards on ebay and Avoid ALL dealers, for they will only lowball.
I just re-watched all six parts of Mr. Mints buying trip in Wisconson, at it looks like Alan Rosen got quite the deal. That's what I gathered after reading some of the comments below the videos.
All week I have been receiving a list from "Norman" and I have been (and currently) spending hours upon hours entering every single card via Beckett.com.
He has EVERY year from 1948 - '55 Bowman. EVERY year Topps from 1952 (125 cards, 5 or 6 high #'s) to 1975+, I have not seen a '71 list yet. EVERYDAY, a 5 or 7 page fax has come through to me with just card numbers, ALL broken down by year. Beckett.com is amazing for entering this.
Did I mention he has a shoe box from EVERY year?
Unbelievable, this has been unbelievable. I really do feel like Mr. Mint on this one. Impatiently waiting for him to report the next year, the next fax to see the assortment and match up the numbers to a player's name. The Mantles only start from 63, I am still waiting to enter '65, '68, and '69. I am doing 1960 as we speak....amazing. The star power is highly evident, but no Ryan RC, no Reggie RC, no Seaver RC, minimal Clemente, no real heavy hitters like Aaron RC, etc..yes a nice Rose RC, really nice Schmidt), this collection has more Yogi's, Koufax's, Feller, Gibson RC, Ford, Mays, Aaron's, etc. It usually contains the top 15 out of 30 cards of each set, but not the top 3 usually.
One card that Norman insists is in MINT condition is........... 1957 Big Blony Checklist No Number Checklist Series 3/4. That could be BIG!
It is all going to come down to CONDITION. I am going back on Sunday to pull the top 100 - 200 high value cards and adjust the Beckett pricing according to condition of these cards. The collection will be made public at some point and a Muggyman video will show this gold...
It's WOW, so freakin wow! I still don't know if it is going to wind up at $25,000, $40,000 or $50,000.
In my head, I have so much to say and describe what I am seeing, but I don't have time to go on writing. I will be bringing the video camera on Sunday and will strategically show as much as possible... "Put Me in Coach!"
I am bringing the buyer, who is a friend of mine too - I have disclosed that I work for Norman, the seller...
DUDES!!!!!!!!!! This collection is a F**KIN dream!!!!!!!!
<<Did Norman ever say what happened to the BIG cards that are missing? >>
He has what he has, he does not really remember his rhyme or reason for how/what he collected. It appears to me that he was trying to complete sets every year. The majority of the cards are from him buying them directly from packs, he swears he can remember purchasing the early Bowman packs. He went to shows in the 80's and collected and bought many cards then too. He knew he didn't have a Mantle RC or stuff like that, he does have 2 Sandy Koufax RC, an early Jackie Robinson, stars galore, etc., but I (or he) doesn't know why he never got the BIG BIG money items.
Believe me, he does have scores of high value cards - again, it will just come down to CONDITION.
He will get a lot of face time on Sunday with his feedback and I will make him reminisce back to his childhood...
