Does this happen often with Memorial Cents....

I purchased awhile ago a complete set of BU Memorial cents and two of them has excessive 'bubbling' on the surfaces.

Is this fairly common?

Maybe due to rusted dies?

Not an everyday thing but not uncommon either. Its the zinc under the copper layer that causes this problem.

  • It is quite common, especially with cents from 83-92, they seemed to have gotten some of thier act together in the early 90"s
  • Time to check your 83-92 mint sets.

My rolls of 1982-D LD Zinc Cents had quite a few like that. Poor plating job or poor surface prep prior to plating.

Don't know if this cent was in this condition when packaged,
or if this occured over time.

...i was assuming it looked this way at the time it was packaged. which wouldn't surprise me judging by my

    own experiences. image
