Is the recent Rainbow Franklin Buzz...

Similar to the toned peace dollar buzz of a few years ago? This is not meant to speculate on anything other than the similarity of the rareness of nicely toned examples in both series'. Seems there are more nicely toned Franklins than Peace dollars though and the toning itself is nicer when you do find them. And lastly how do the WLHs toners compared to these 2? Seems those are even rarer in nice toning than both of these.

Tarnish is a result of metal composition and environmental conditions. Under the proper conditions, all three will tarnish. Cheers, RickO

What are the proper conditions? Taco Bell napkins, an electric oven or a chemical bath? image

Rock-O I think no matter how many times I read the shtick it makes me giggle. image

I can see the headlines..... as a huge scandal unrolls on the boards when you reveal the hoard of monster toners you've been able to accumulate after single handedly driving down prices with anti-toning propaganda. But your secret is safe with me ;image I won't tell the rest of the board

But of course no response would be complete without defending my fellow toning sickies.....

it does sadden me to see no mention of the fun associated with studying and learning about the subtleties in planchet preparation, minting process and storage which are widely acknowledged to account for great differences in how certain series tone, and even for certain date/mm to tone within series. And then the exhileration in finding the one or two coins which nearly defy all the odds stacked up against them- and which have toned to dramatic and natural colors. There is no experience I've found after thirty years of collecting both toned and untoned coins which come close to first setting eyes on one.

But please don't stop cracking on toners, it IS keeping prices under control image
I'd like my copper well done please!

For peace dollars, yes more often than not . I would say at least 4 of MuMu's sig line are AT or at best non-normally stored pushed along coins. And the rest of the buzz that he refers to is injected conversation by Toned Franklin collectors which may or may not count as "buzz". That being said there are lots more colorful Franks out there thanks to the Mint Sets. Most of the NT Peace and WLH's this humble collector has seen have been yellow/gold or brown to burnt orange with a few pastel peaches or purples streaks on a limited range of dates. I have seen wilder colors on cleaned or over dipped coins and of course environmentally damaged ones when the raw silver has been exposed and what ever the mint did to them changed.

if you're paying attention you'll notice that a very, very high percentage of the nicely toned Franklins are 1957's and 1958's. they are what i refer to as the 1881-s Morgan equivalent although not quite to the same extent. seeing a nicely toned 1957 or 1958 Franklin doesn't even pique my interest anymore. they are, in a word, common.

also regararding the "Rainbow" toned Peace Dollars, HRH cleared that up awhile ago, didn't he??

if you think about it, the scarcity of these three issues in nicely toned Rainbow state-----Peace Dollars, Liberty Walking Half-Dollars, Franklin Half-Dollars----is directly linked to their storage and what was commonly used by the Mint and subsequently by collectors. the Mint would have used bags and rolls(post Mint, actually) for all three in addition to issuing the Franklin Half-Dollar in the standard Mint Sets. collectors would use a wide range of storage; rolls, tubes, folders, binders, flips, 2X2's, etc.

of the storage that i'm aware of only one typically renders the true Rainbow shades, Mint issue cardboard Mint Sets.

End roll toners can also have true rainbow shades. Some albums, coin folders, and envelopes are also another form of storage that can produce true rainbow toned franklins but it is rare.

as you say, it is rare.

the tone i'm speaking of(and i suspect the OP, also) and the coins we should expect to see it on typically happens to only one of the three with anything close to predictability or expectabilty. the other stuff for any coin type is pure chance, the Mint seemed to ensure it would happen as a matter of routine, even to them. also, i think we see it more on the Franklin due to it's size and the slowness of the toning process. i think it would be interesting to study the difference in the color blend and progression onthe minor coins contained in the Sets rendering the multi-colored Franklins we see. no doubt some members can comment on that, but what i see on the Quarters and Dimes from the nicer Half-Dollar containg Sets is darker coins with less intense color.

as for Rainbow coins, true Rainbow coins typically have bands, don't they?? or are there two classes now, Rainbow and banded Rainbow coins??

Nope i totally agree. A true rainbow toned coin should have rainbow bands. Coins that display many different colors in a wild mix are just colorfully toned image. I have owned many mint sets and usually the rest of the silver coins will have very similar color to the franklins. Now the lincolns and jefferson nickels almost never match the rest of the set.

Coppercolor, Ricko has had no affect on the price of monster toned coins.
