As a BST seller, how long are you obligated…

to “hold” an item when someone says they want it, but then disappears? I have been getting a lot of people asking what my pp addy is acting as if they want the item, and then they disappear.

How much time should be allowed for someone who acts/pretends that they are actually going to pay but never does, without having to hear the wrath of that one that just might get back with you after say, 2 days?

I understand it’s the Holidays and we can get pulled in many directions this time of year, but I’m really getting tired of deadbeats, and some are very well known profiles.

I’m asking this here because a similar thread got locked when posted on the BST Forum

Just use common sense and make sure both sides understand each other upfront.
    It's really not rocket science.

Since there seems to be no uniform regulations on the BST, you may be advised to state your conditions, either in the listing, or in your reply to a potential buyer. But I think two days is too long. Someone may have contacted you intending to buy just before they left for work, or just before turning in for the night, or some such circumstance, so I'd say 24 hours is all you should allow for a paypal payment to be made, or to receive a stated commitment to mail the payment.

I would wait 3 days, and if no response, send them a message stating that the offer is good until:_______.

Actually, whenever I am negotiating with a buyer, I advise the potential purchaser that the offer is good until (put in a specific date, maybe three days).

It's your item to do with as you want. Simple fact is the early bird gets the worm fact of nature that carries to coins. If they snooze they lose.
Missed a coin on eBay this afternoon by not hitting the BIN fast enough same has happened on the BST many times.

Thanks for the advice folks. I think I will start saying that the offer is good for a day (24 hours), but on the other hand, I dont want to rub the person the wrong way because some people would take that as being pressured into buying.
Kind of a delicate line to walk.
    Anyway, thanks again.

Label item "pending" in the BST while awaiting payment.

Got another question. Is it accepteable for the seller to edit the thread that they were selling something in immediately to show nothing in that thread?

    Ex:
I sell something on BST...buyer has not yet paid me, or even if the buyer did pay me...can I go into that thread and delete everything in it immediately or should I out of courtesy leave everything in that thread until the buyer has received the item(s)?
I guess what I'm asking is why is it a secret what you sold and doesn't the buyer deserve the courtesy of being able to see everything in the thread, unedited in any way?

  • Yep, common sense goes along way these days. With the holiday I would say 2 days, some people don't live on the boards.

To me, these are silly questions.
Common sense and just thinking about things.

In this case, what courtesy are you doing by having the buyer "able to see everything in the thread, unedited in any way"?
For me, I just put SOLD but some folks have reasons they don't want to leave prices up.

I do like it when I can go back and see the thread as I may buy something on Saturday and not prepare to send money (I don't do paypal on my smartphone, but I may read a thread and buy from the smartphone) until later, or, in the case of a check, not prepare it until Sunday night/Monday morning. In that case, I may not remember whether it was $XXX shipped or $XXX + $y shipped. So, leaving it in the thread is helpful and saves me from asking in a PM and waiting for a reply.

Also, I like to go back and get the pics which I may not have done originally.

If the buyer backs out, or returns the item, it is much easier to just bump the thread and have everything there rather than retype it all. Of course, some folks don't do that as they think it makes the item look "damaged"; having been refused. With coins though, to me, there are too many different ways to view them and not everyone enjoys the same thing. So, what one may like, another may not...no harm, no foul.

I have a question that is just the opposite of the OP.I PM'ed a seller several days ago asking about some of their coins they have for sale.Looking to buy a $200 coin.I have not gotten any response from them and I have seen that they were logged in at least twice since I sent the PM.

24 hours for payment, unless agreed otherwise (pymt date, pymt method)

if they are at their computer to search, find and buy it - they are there to pay for it as well.

I agree with the posts which say if there is not payment within 24 hours after agreement on the deal, and no further communication from buyer, I'd send a follow up note reminding of terms of deal and setting a time for payment. A couple of days after this reminder notice seems reasonable to me. If its bullion items and someone is playing around with day to day prices...you'll learn soon enought who to avoid/ignore when they make offers.

On the other side, as to the poster who made inquiry/offers and never heard back from BST seller, I'd give it a second shot; if still no response, I'd move on with the unhappy recognition that for whatever reason, the seller has decided they don't want to do business with me. I'd prefer if the seller would PM me with a reason/explanation...but if they're too shy to do so...I'm not going to knock myself out trying to figure out why. Lots of other places to spend my money. I've seen a .338 Lapua single shot upper made by Zel Custom Mfg. that will fit on my AR-15 lower. I'd like to give that a try too if I can't get a dealer to sell me coins.

Wrong......if you want 24-48 hours to "make up your mind", then sit there and think about it for 2 days BEFORE you tell the seller you want the item! Once you say "i'll take it".....then send the payment. We are adults, not children. Make a decision then act on it.

Agree. Make up your mind before you contact the seller. Either commit to buy it at his price or make a firm offer.

Himmm, i'm image It's "silly questions", but your reasons for wanting to be able to go back and refer to the thread seems to be in favor of what I asked about. Maybe i'm misunderstanding? Either way, thanks for the input...from all of you.

I have had several hundred transactions on the BST forum and never had a single problem. I attribute it to good communication.

    1. A detailed PM outlining the item(s) and the price as well as payment type and s/i agreement.
    2. Buyer sending a PM when payment is sent. ( Either by mail or Paypal )
    3. Seller sending PM when payment is received and when item is mailed. ( Include tracking # )
    4. Buyer sending PM when item is received.

    Works for me.

Oh no a free thinker get him get him.. Well nothing to fear alot of people in this world dont possess common sense so no reason to believe it will ever catch on with the general public.

I would say 72 hrs with a follow up saying you have untill end of the week or its going back on the BTS as active. if that happens make a statement on the post that once both parties agree on price payment within 48 hrs unless otherwise agreed upon.
