ngc plus versus pcgs plus

bidaskbidask Posts: 14,017 ✭✭✭✭✭
Pcgs plus coins are a step in the right direction to further differentiate coins graded with the same grade.

A couple months later, ngc followed with their plus program....

I have not seen many ngc plus examples or opinions about the quality of their plus coins.....

Any thoughts or views of ngc plus coins as to quality?

Their star program has ats coins in the slabs.

I manage money. I earn money. I save money .
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.

One big difference....you have to pay PCGS extra to even consider a plus. NGC considers all coins regardless of the teir. This is a biggie in my book. Even if a coin deserves a plus, you won't get it unless you pay for it.

That's not true. Regular submissions have been eligible for the PCGS Plus for some time, not just Secure Plus.

I have no personal experience with NGC+ though I almost purchased an NGC +*CAC a little while back. image I do not submit to NGC and rarely submit to PCGS.

I have seen both services with +'s be rejected by _ _ _ because they weren't even solid for the grade.
That said i've also seen nice coins from both sides.
may the fonz be with you...always...
  • We were better off with out the +. Seems both services are having problems getting the grades right on + coins.

I do not want at technical +, I want a real + coin that has it all.

I just do not care.... If I like the coin, I acquire it. Cheers, RickO

My understanding is the "bar" for the NGC plus is much lower -- only needs to be top 50% for the grade, whereas the PCGS plus is top 20% for the grade.

I did not know that. All of these extras are sure adding some confusion to the marketplace.

For example, take an 1872 quarter in a PCGS MS-65 OGH holder. To maximize the price of the coin, should one get it stickered, crossed, regraded, Secure Plussed, or do nothing?

I have never heard that before, and dont think there is set guideline.

  • The first _ _ _-labled coin I ever bought, I didn't know was labeled 'til I received my package from CRO, a nice 1836 $2.5 gold piece. I still don't go looking for stickers, or pluses, for that matter. I do mostly shop for already-slabbed PCGS pieces, for the value aspect, but do keep my eye on other tpg-graded coins. I've crossed a few to PCGS before.

For me, I prefer a clear gasket holding my coin. In another thread somewhere, Monsterman mentioned he liked his commems in a holder with a white background. Hey, that's OK too, isn't it? Yo, somebody go tell Monsterman he's doing it wrong!!!

    lmao

It's sure nice to see him posting again, semi-regularly. Glad he's feeling better.

Here's hoping we all feel a little better this coming year.

NGC applies plus grading to even its least expensive service, while PCGS will not plus-grade "economy". You have to pay for the more expensive service even if your coin qualifies for economy.

My understanding is the "bar" for the NGC plus is much lower -- only needs to be top 50% for the grade, whereas the PCGS plus is top 20% for the grade.

I have heard this assertion as well. I haven't seen it in writing from NGC, though. Below is from their website.
    Lance.

    PLUS DESIGNATION

NGC assigns a + to coins at the high end of their assigned grade, approaching the quality requirements for the next grade. In addition to their superior technical merit, coins receiving a plus designation must have above-average eye appeal.

For example, a coin graded NGC MS 64+ is close to the quality of a coin graded NGC MS 65. The + is synonymous with the term "PQ" or "Premium Quality."

Not all coins are eligible for +. Coins grading from XF 45 to MS 68 or PF 45 to PF 68 may receive a +, while lower- and higher-grade coins cannot. Additionally, the + is only assigned to United States coins from 1792 to 1964.

Coins are automatically evaluated for + during grading when submitted under the Economy, Early Bird, Gold Rush, Specialty Gold, Express and WalkThrough tiers. All on-site and CrossOver grading submissions are also automatically evaluated for +. There is no designation review service for +. Coins must be submitted for grading to receive this designation.

I will pay more for a coin that I think is PQ for the grade given and don't give a hoot
what all the other paid opinions are.

    If I like I like.
If they like it, I might like it also.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Recently I took a shot and purchased a coin graded MS-62+ by NGC. I had been searching for this date to add to my PCGS registry set for several years. I paid a little more than I wanted to but I liked the coin because it was a true UNC with original surfaces. The luster was subdued by the toning so I was concerned that PCGS might not cross the coin at the same grade. I asked a friend and he suggested that I find an example in a PC holder to avoid being disappointed. Since I was at the show I decided to purchase the coin and submit it to PCGS for crossover with a minimum grade of MS-62. I liked the coin and would be pleased to own it regardless of the holder, of course I hoped it would crossover to PCGS so I could place it in my registry set. Not only did it cross, it upgraded to MS-63. I realize this is very unusual but I'm thrilled. Thanks PCGS image

  • NGC + coins are usually very, very nice. They're about as reserved with the + as PCGS.
