PCGS lost an item i sent in. Has this happened to anyone else?

PCGS lost an item I sent to them. Finally after two weeks and some tough negotiations with customer service they agreed to pay a reasonable amount but I am wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else?

perhaps give it a bit more than 2 weeks.

I had a 3-day guaranteed delivery (Expresspost) from Canada to the US take 15 days to get delivered.

I'm sorry to hear that, proofcents. I hope you're okay with the settlement.

Given the numbers I feel certain it has happened before. I'll bet PCGS has a remarkable record and very strong controls. But with tens of thousands of coins rolling through the place every month (week?) something inevitably ends up in sockland.

Yes. I had dropped off a submission at a show and they sent it, along with other submissions, to themselves via Express Mail but did not register it. The box never showed up. I lost 4 really nice coins. Yes, PCGS paid the "insured" amount, but those 4 coins would be hard to be replaced. I should have insured for much higher, though I used greysheet pricing when this happened. This was about 5 years ago.
  • It was a large cent i bought raw from the Dan Holmes collection. I had it in a small envelope with the pedigree info and they threw it out on accident. I was just wonder if anyone else had issuse with PCGS losing an items.

That being said i've sent them i bet close to 500 coins and this is the first time so it was bound to happen some time i guess..........

Was the lost item the complete submission or was it a single item from a bigger submission?
Makes more sense if the item was the entire submission.

Yikes! They threw it out by accident? I would suggest to PCGS that all trash cans
be plastic and all get checked by a metal detector before they get emptied.

    oh man, that stinks.

you write the ""# of collectibles in this package"" for a reason. I'm surprised they could say "thrown out" as an explanation.

The express mail box was never delivered? That's rare. Out of probably thousands of express mails and fedexes I've sent, I've only lost, rephrase, only 1 was ever lost and it was due to a theft. I sent a 1920-S St Gaudens to a dealer on the west coast and it didn't arrive. The box did but the coin didn't. Was listed as a mysterious disappearance too by that dealers insurance company and he paid me out of his pocket which was 20K or so at that time ( more than a decade ago )

They ultimately caught the dirtbag. Apparently was the fedex driver who stole it then sent it to his brother on the east coast to sell. He walked it into a coin shop and I'm not saying how the rest of the eventual sting happened but if you know me, pm me and I'll tell you. It was simple and effective though image

When a package shows up but without its contents (in dealer lingo we call those "gutted" packages) is probably the most common form of transit theft. That is why it is good practice to securely tape up the package at all possible openings to foil any potential of tampering.

  • In this case they had it on the video tape in their recieveing department video of them throwing it out but by the time they relaized what happened the garbage had been emptied

Had this happen to 1 of 2 coins sent in a package to me by a forum member. Super thin slit in the very center of the back (manila padded envelope if I recall from a few years ago). Super nice, from the pics, 1855 large cent was missing image

The slit was so slim and tight, I didn't notice until I opened the package (which I did at the post office when I picked it up) and was missing the coin.

After that, I take steps similar to what Wei mentions above, but to a further degree....I usually put take not only on the openings, but also on the open space on the rear of the mailing. 99% of the time I do that with the paper registered mail tape.

I may have to find out where PCGS' garbage gets dumped at and go diving for a large sent that the OP lost image

(sorry for the loss like that....it isn't nice when it happens)

That's the reason why the top right part of the submission form needs to be correctly filled out so they know how many coins and orders to look for in the package.

Something tells me that it will take a while around here until the OP of the said reference is forgotten about and can go 2 days without a further reminder of what they did. I'm not saying it was right or wrong but --Will someone else PLEASE screw up so we have something else to talk about. image

Does PCGS have an openings for "janitors?"

Ask Rick Snow why PCGS now videotapes the opening of packages and includes that information in the top right part of the submission forms.

I've heard that they also send the opened boxes through a metal detector before it goes out.

I thought all coins were required to be submitted in those clear plastic flips that PCGS provides for free in order to avoid this sort of thing from happening.

Not from the front page but one of their experts who is also a major contributor here. No mail or PCGS involved. Dumpster-diving was involved.
