PCGS vs ATS - honest question

shorecollshorecoll Posts: 5,447 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't think this should ruffle anything.

I've seen people crack or crossover ATS slabs, even for a grade lower PCGS slab.

Do people ATS routinely crack PCGS slabs hoping for a higher NGC grade?

This no doubt happens if the coin is likely to achieve a higher sales price in an NGC XX+1 holder than a PCGS XX holder and if the owner believes it will get the XX+1 grade at NGC, but not at PCGS.

    some even do it here

A point and a star for some coins could really increase selling price of same coin

It works both ways. PCGS coins will sometimes upgrade with NGC. NGC coins will sometimes upgrade with PCGS. NGC coins will sometimes downgrade with PCGS. PCGS coins will sometimes downgrade with NGC.

    I've seen it attempted.

Years ago I handled an 1805, 4 berry reverse dime in NGC MS-62. I sold it to a dealer, and at the next show he had the same coin in PCGS holder. The grade was still MS-62.

Many years ago I had 1796 No Stars quarter eagle in an NGC AU-50 holder. I loved the coin and wish to this day that I could have afforded to keep it. It was cracked from the NGC AU-50 holder and ended up in a PCGS AU-58 holder.

Things don't always work out the way some of you guys might they always do.

I've only had 1 dime cross at grade from NGC to PCGS. They usually lose a grade or two and I account for that when buying.

I don't know why in the world anyone would want to cross the other way??!! A coin is worth more in PCGS than NGC even at a lower grade.
  • Ive cracked a few pcgs coins and sent them to NGC not for upgrades but to try and get the star at the same grade. So far every coin ive done it with graded the same as when it was in the pcgs holder. Only about 3 have gotten the star.

Sometimes that might be the case, but you wrote as if it is commonplace/the rule. It clearly isn't.

I want to bring everyone back to the basics.

"buy the coin NOT the holder"

This applies to ALL holders, no exceptions.

Can't believe people still think that way though. By now we know PCGS usually brings more money; but often only slightly more and sometimes no more at all.
  • Yes.

Some people collect strictly NGC as well, so they will cross things PCGS to NGC.

My primary point of issue is commems, I have seen many commems in NGC plastic that I thought were a point high. I know others on here have seen more than me and may have different opinions.

Edited to add: but I have never thought of cracking a PCGS65 to get it in an NGC66 holder.

    Leon

Half of my commems are in NGC plastic ( all but two are stars) and the balance are PCGS. I've paid up for all of them. I think any commem collector that buys only one slab or the other is short changing themselves. There are some awesome commems in both TPG's plastic. All one really needs to do is look at the registry sets at both NGC and PCGS. Those of us who took Larry Shepherd's two day commem class at 2009 Summer ANA looked at hundreds of spectacular examples in both PCGS and NGC plastic. It left a lasting impression on me. Larry firmly believes that there is no difference between the two services on commems. It's all about the coin. Yes, you can find maxed out and over graded commems in both slabs...............JMHO. One reason I have been buying more NGC coins lately is the prong holders, any coin with a lettered edge really needs to be slabbed this way.
I hope PCGS offers an edge view holder sooner or later.

Thanks MJ, I do appreciate your opinion on this...wish I could have made it to that class. My favorite commem is a raw Lafayette from Julian.image

I think some have misunderstood my post on slabs.

I buy the coin....not the holder! I will buy a coin in any holder if the coin is nice and I like it!

Then if it is not in the correct holder....I cross it to PCGS!

I learned my slabbing lesson early in my collecting career....

I had a NGC MS62 Trade $1 - sent to PCGS to cross at any grade as part of a "Free" submission - came back PCGS AU58 - sent back to NGC for crossover and it came back as an MS62....

What did you learn? Which coin in which slab do you think would have gotten you more money if you sold it?
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.
