My First Silver Sale, Not So Simple

I have been stacking silver for about a year now, mostly franklin halves that I find on ebay underpriced occassionally. Unfortunately this week I made a $1,000 error balancing my checkbook and ended up spending way too much on Xmas presents. But I did realize the error before all the hot checks came rolling in. Now I could confess the error to my wife and transfer $1,000 from savings, OR I could take my stack to the B&M for my first silver sale. Obviously, I would never admit such a mistake to my wife so off I go for my first silver sale. The man behind the counter offers 19 x face for my coins and I begin to stack my Franklins in stacks of ten. He asks if I am selling them all and I tell him I only want to sell $1,000 worth. He says ok and calculates that will be $52.60. He rakes 5 stacks plus three more franklins and says that should be about right. As I am headed to the bank for my deposit I keep thinking I had no idea I had stacked that much silver. I still had over half my frankilins with me. Then it hits me! Yep, he had figured each stack of ten Franklins as $10, not $5. Five minutes later I am back at the counter informing him of his mistake and surrendering the rest of my Franklins. Before you congratulate me on my honesty, remember this, I will never tell my wife about the checking error I made. There was so much irony in this story I just had to tell someone, just not my wife.

  • I will commend you on your honest move. Integrity should not be for sale at any price! Well done.
  • I am sure a dealer that made such a mistake when selling to you would have done the same! that was a nice thing you did

Correct. You can not pick and choose your spots to be honest. It's got to be 100% of the time. It can not be when it's only convenient. Good for you and if you have children you will be an outstanding example for them................MJ

You need to keep an honest relationship with the dealer if you want it to last.

This sounds alot like an O'Henry short story! "Gift of the Maji" I wouldn't sweat it that you spent "too much" on Christmas presents. You have your reward, and your story has warmed some hearts here. I'm sure that your dealer appreciates it too.image

Great story and a fine gesture on being honest with your "dealer." You might tell your wife without providing details that you miscalculated the checkbook but that you straightened it all out.

Cool story. And a much happier ending than the drawn out somewhat similar one on the coin forum.

Did the same thing once with my local dealer and headed home with a pile of slabbed saints. Then it hit me when I was figuring an average cost in my head that I had paid well under melt for the group....lol. I called him on my cell phone (of course after pulling off the road first). He said don't worry about it, just mail me a check for the difference.

  • What about the three Franklin halves, they don't
    equal $2.60

  • It was actually 2 franklins, 2 1960 quarters, and a 1961 dime, but I was trying to condense the story. So he gave me $1 value for each of the 52 franklins.
  • Great story....you can't buy integrity, and nobody can steal your character!!
