Where do you buy the coins for your collection?

What is the primary method you use to purchase coins for your collection?

I buy all my moderns from eBay/Teletrade/Heritage and almost always buy the classics in person.

See how easy it is to find coin doctors! All PCGS has to do is check the logs to see who selected coin doctor and they'll have their first confession. image

Are the early results accurate... or just accurate for an online survey? Approximately 90% of those responding purchase most of their coins online? Would that imply that the majority of sales at coin shops... coin shows are dealer-to-dealer?

I buy most of my coins online.
I buy most of my coins on the BST.
I buy most of my coins from online auctions.
I buy most of my coins from online dealers.

These could be inclusive in most of my cases.
You have to be online to use the BST, eBay, Teletrade, Heritage, dealers web sites, US Mint, Etc........................

BTW I have saved links to all listed in my favorites at the top of this page.

A good percentage online. Through dealer sites, ebay, and heritage. Though some dealer sites and prices at shows are priced quite strong.
All coins kept in bank vaults.

I tried to make it general - online if you buy your coins from different types of online sources or specific - if you buy your coins from a specific type of online source (BST, auctions or dealers).

I buy most of my coins online from auctions so I answered #3.

Almost all of my coins are purchased from a dealer who has no on-line presence and only goes to shows. I do not go to the shows - he just sends me coins for approval. Best coin relationship I ever had.

I used to buy mostly online (eBay).

For the past several years, I've bought mostly at coin shows.

    What LindeDad said.

This poll needs a 'just show me the results' option.

I buy the vast majority of my coins in person at shows. That goes for the number of coins and the dollar volume.

Over the past three or four years I've bought the vast majority of my tokens and medalets from on-line auctions. The reason for that is that the pickings for 19th century political tokens have been mightly slim at the shows. Some of the dealers who take booths at the shows sell their best pieces in their on-line auctions because they get better prices. It probably has something to do with the influx of people from on-line sources who have gotten hooked on these historical pieces via the computer.

Ideally I get to see the pieces in person before I bid on them, but fortunately the on-line dealers I use are conservative graders which makes for a much better experience.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

EBAY.....the # of coins I've bought off Ebay has dwindled the last two years.

The last coin I bought off Ebay was from a member here.

I used to buy mostly online, but I've bought items with some deceptive pictures, so I'm leaning more towards by coins from shows, B&M's, etc...

I buy blank pieces of silver and tool them into whatever coin my little heart desires.

Seriously, there's a handful of dealers that sell stuff I like, some collectors have helped me, a couple things off the BST
