I like change on coinage, but they just can't seem to do anything worthwhile.

I like the new reverse design, but there were several others that I thought were much better.

50 years is more than enough for the memorial, it was time for a change.

It is time to change everything including getting the presidents off the obverse.

  • Thw Wheatbacks were very nice, but the LMC was a true representaion of one of our great Presidents. Having his memorial on the back of his coin is a great honor, you can't get any better. The new shield cent is a gubmint aproved, put anything on the back of a worthless cent, way of the future. It in NO way holds a candle to the LMC in my eyes.

SInce the penny isn't worth anything anyway, and it costs way more to make it than 1c, why don't we just stop making them?

    From the linked article:

"This building has a lot of meaning for me," said Schubert, 73, who first came to Washington on a high school trip.
    ...

I'll miss seeing it on the penny."

Then Schubert paused to consider the scale of the change, literally. "Not that I look at pennies very much anyway," he said.

  • I'm all for design change, but since we're basically losing money every time we strike one of these, why spend all of the money to come up with new reverses?

I was not a fan of the shield design when it first appeared, but when I seen them in hand, coupled with the reintroduction of the original Brenner portrait design....they won me over. I feel that the shield design very well COULD have been a design Brenner himself would have been proud of in 1909 and had he introduced it at the time, could have very well be the original design all along. It is indeed a very 19th century flavored design, more so than the wheat ears which are abstract in a 1900s sort of way.

The Memorial was a realistic portrayal, and I DO remember the first time I walked home from Billy Breders store looking intently at the FIRST lincoln memorial cent I had ever seen...and with my young eyes seeing ABE sitting in there. It was a fine reverse design and like mentioned in the article, a great link to Lincoln as many of us have been there on school trips or vacations over the years.

It is much bigger in person than it is in on the cent image
  • 50 years is too long for anything to appear on a coin.

Coin designs need to be changed from time to time.... however, what they have done to quarters is atrocius. We need to bring back art to our coinage. The memorial design was not art. Nor was the four 2009 designs. Why they will not allow art is beyond me. Dead presidents and commercials for states are not suitable for our coinage. Cheers, RickO

The only real problem with the new cent is that they changed the wrong side. It is the portrait of the "Great Destroyer" that should have been removed.

The reporter's sample was tiny. It just a typical popular article.
  • I for one think the new design is a substantial improvement, which is unusual given the recent trend towards increasingly cluttered designs that make for great proofs but noisy circulation strikes. I do wish they'd bring up the relief some more--coins for the past 20 years have been pretty flat. But, I guarantee that if we had gone from the shield to the memorial, we'd see at least as many people complaining.

I am one that usually is allergic to change (ultimate conservative) but I like this change because it is a design change on a coin. Those changes can be refreshing. It is not too simple and not to busy. It has a classic type feel to it. I think over time it will come to be liked by most.

  • Change is good. But not for the sake of change, itself.
That said, I am particularly fond of the shield reverse of the Lincoln cent. I do hope, though, that the obverse of the "Lincoln" does not change. The slight modifications of the Lincoln portrait over the years does not, in my opinion, really constitute a change.

I'm partial to the idea of Sigmund Freud on the obverse, a donkey on the reverse. That way, we can symbolize its "shrink-"ing value while the jack-a's keep diluting it.

They won't be missing it any time too soon. Since they made 10's of billions of LMC's, they're not likely to leave circulation for a lil while longer.

Did someone steal it? Those terrorists will do almost anything these daysimage. Oh, I thought you meant the Memorial in DC coming to an end.
