Muggyman has never seen this in a 1985 Topps rack pack...

Look at this rack pack with Mark McGwire RC on top. It does NOT have the ALL STAR GLOSSY CARD which is always in the first spot and 1 per pack included. But, this one has McGwire's RC instead and no all star card. I don't believe I have ever seen that before... "I don't believe what I just saw." - Jack Buck

I'll also include the link to another relevant and current thread regarding a 1985 pack of McGwire top AND Clemens ON TOP in question that I own...

    Dear aceandchris,

    Hi there,

I was wondering if you knew the original source of this pack? I noticed that the McGwire card is in the position of a special GLOSSY card Topps always had there - in the 1st slot, exactly as in your 1984 rack pack you have up.

'just curious if the you think the pack/McGwire card looks suspicious or you obtained this directly from a box?

    thank you!

    Dear muggyman,

I got this rack pack about 8 years ago at a swap meet in San Diego, typical story it was in a box with many other rack packs from the 80's but I wanted what was underneath, 82,84 donruss sets 84,87 fleer sets in the original boxes, the lady said I had to buy the whole box, price $25. I did not discover the mcgwire rack pack until later when I got home. Not sure about the glossy though. Far As I know it looks like a normal rookie card.

So, let me get this straight...about 8 years ago, just about the time McGwire was the most popular dude on the planet earth, someone who collects baseball cards just happened to overlook a rack pack with McGwire on top, which the card alone was booking for over $100, not to mention that the seller had a whole box of cards and was willing to sell all of them for $25???

That is the biggest BS story I have ever heard in my life. This guy KNOWS the pack is bogus

The way that reads, it seems like the seller thought you meant the McGwire might be glossy... lol
  • Hey now... just because the seller has a rack that is nothing like any rack I've ever seen (I put together over a dozen sets in 1985 from rack packs from the local Toys R Us where I had a friend getting me employee discount), it happens to have a card that is recognized as one of the most valuable regular issue cards of the 80's in it in place of the glossy card, and the story sounds kinda funky doesn't mean that this seller is full of crap. Oh wait... yes it does.

Well, in this guy's favor, at least the McGwire is facing the correct direction (I think) image

    I appreciate your response, thanks!

I do have to ask though... About 8 years ago, McGwire cards were the hottest cards out there, this card alone was booking for almost $100. It just seems odd to overlook a pack with him on top and that it was included in an entire box purchase of only $25.

It is just something I have to ask, I have never bought from you, so no disrespect intended - just part of the authenticity vetting process.

    Thank you!

Very Nice Ironman...malign the dead. Paul Wright did more for this hobby than you could ever hope to do in your lifetime. There really is no need for those type of comments. When you look in the mirror tonite, feel proud of yourself.

I'm not sure if I ever saw '85 rack packs missing the glossy card, but I know I saw that exact mistake back in '83 at my local Toys R Us (an entire rack box was packed that way). In 1988 I found rack packs with the Rookie All-Star Team glossy card (which was supposed to only be on the 100-card grocery jumbo packs) in place of the regular All-Star glossy card.

If it were a common card, I'd just chalk it up as a Topps packaging error. Under these circumstances, I'd be quite concerned as to authenticity.

  • It's not as though faking this particular item would be a huge money-gainer now. I don't see how it's a huge deal. Not as though he just did it yesterday or even a few years ago in hopes of a huge pay-day. It's probably just a hold-over from when it would have been a big seller.

Paul Wright was one of the hobby's first and foremost experts on unopened vintage material. Scroll back a few pages and see Steve Hart's posts on him. Ironman...IMF?? Me dude?? A second brilliant post!!

Although the comment was in poor taste, I don't think it was directed at Paul Wright. I think it was directed at any authenticator that would verify a pack's authenticity simply because Paul Wright was a previous owner....e.g. authenticity by provenance.

I'm not suggesting that is what anyone did -- but the dig was not directed at Paul

Paul Wright owned a specific pack that others are saying must be legit because he once owned it...

and others are making light of it...
