It's not a US coin, but just to mix it up a bit...
Ptolemy X gave the gold coffin of Alexander the Great to mercenaries who he paid to help keep him in power. I image the gold coffin was then made into coins to disperse to the individual soldiers.
I would like one of those.
If not, one of the gold Athenian Owls made from the gold clothing of the statue of the Goddess Athena that resided in the Parthenon would be a dream coin as well.
1849 $20 gold piece (Smithsonian has the only one) 1891 barber patterns (see above) 1822 $5 1906 barber proof $20 1804 $ all three types 1794 $ Specimen 66
Always has been and always will be a Pan Pac $50 gold octagonal slug. Ever since I first saw a picture of it in my first red book. I'll never own one, though, unless I hit a home run somewhere else...
For a more realistic dream, my only wish list item for 2011 is a nice Pine Tree shilling. I'm sure I'll pick one up sometime next year. Got my eye on one coming up next month...
AU 55 1955 DDO RB Lincoln Cent I was born in '55 with reddish brown hair and I'm 55. Easy enough dream coin to get but if I do, it won't be a dream coin any more.
I would like to one day own a rainbow toned MS 65 or better 1921 peace dollar. Ive yet to even see one let alone estimate when I might even afford one.
Milled 1732 8 reales Mexico but other than that I already own my dream coin. The milled 1732 8 reales is a possibility I may own at some point. 45+- are known to exist in all grades.

PR66CAM Flying Eagle Cent
1838-O Half
1794 Dollar in problem free VF or better
Chain AMERI. cent in problem free AU or better
Eliasberg's old 1793 S-13 beaded border Liberty Cap cent
A really beautiful PR66 or better VDB
... all in no particular order
Wow! Okay, 13 years later...
I now own a PR65+CAM Flyer (Blay pedigree, so that's gotta count for something)
no '38-O half
no 1794 dollar
I now own an AU53 Chain Cent
I most certainly do not own Eliasberg's S-13 cent (or any other one for that matter)
I do own a PR66RB VDB

I already own mine - Gobrecht Dollar.
Mine just wiped out the coin budget for years and annoyed the gf to the point where I decided it best for all involved if I spring for a large gift for her.

If you had placed one in your pocket back when this thread was initiated you would have your dream coin today.
I didn't even recognize it was an old thread. So, I went forward to see who restarted it and found out that I did. LOL!
This thread turned up as part of a search and I started reading it without noticing the date. You know the rest.

I'm surprised to see I didn't post this back in 2010, but my dream coin has always been a '13 nickel......
The type 1 (on the mound) or the type 2 (on the plane)?

I've always LOVED Satin Proofs. Two of these coins below are owned by a good friend @Floridafacelifter, so I've been able to live vicariously through him and get glances of my dream coins that I would otherwise never be able to own.
I did manage to acquire the 1878-CC Trade $ that I stated in the original post in VF-35, but stopped collecting Capped Bust halves before getting the 1815/2. Now it would probably be an 1876-s DDO Trade $.
I guess a nice Pine Tree shilling would be on my list to have someday (if we're limiting it to pieces within the realm of possibility). A nice Fugio cent, ditto.
Maybe a piece of pre-1834 gold.
I probably couldn't afford even a gnarly 1796 quarter.

1822 $5
1906 barber proof $20

That's enough greed and dreaming for now....
My two picks are either:
A nice 1818 quarter eagle
That PCGS PF67+ 1909 V.D.B. Cent Gold CAC we've been discussing lately

Holy moley, a thread revived from 2010. For me I don't care about this-or-that rare date, my thing is old, rare types. So -
NE Shilling
Higley Copper
Sommer Island Hogge
Half Disme
Any 1793 copper in decent grade
Yeah that should do for now.
They were kind of pricey in 2010, but now I'm finding quite a few in change . . .

A 1792 Disme would be one heck of a cherry on top of my half cent collection. It won't happen, but I love to dream it.
I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.
The best highest graded 55 DD cent with luster. Second place a top graded $20 Saint.
A Proof Peace Dollar
In US coins? Don't really have a single "dream coin", but here's one...
(Edit: "someday plan to"? Nope. I'll never have one of these.)
