Thought it was an interesting, simple example of the difference between holding on to silver certificates vs. keeping the silver dollar they represented.

    Yep, as a kid I could go to the bank and get silver dollars any time I wanted. With Silver Certificates.

    Heck ... those silver dollars were so unwanted by the banks, I didn't need silver certificates to get some..regular greenbacks would do. ( circa 1954 - 1957)

    That logic is not applicable in every situation. In a few cases you'd do better with the silver certificate.

    I didn't need silver certificates to get some..regular greenbacks would do.

    I don't remember how often you would see an FRN. Most of the higher dollar notes were US Notes, I think. As a kid, you had to be rich in order to make it to that strata, and that didn't happen much.image
