What to do if I have to sell?

Hi Everyone - Unfortunately I might have to sell my entire collection. Due to financial problems. If things don't change then I have to sell.
I am sitting on around 11+G of inventory.
The 1982 Topps and 1984 Topps sets are so incomplete I know what I need to do to sell those. My main questions is the Derek Jeter collection I have been working on...
Over 7G of it is Derek Jeter cards.
For Jeter I currently have 397 cards. 355 are psa 10 the remainder are psa 9s and a psa 8.5 and a couple PSA 8s.
If I do end up selling the Jeter collection. I will wait until he hits 3000 hits so I can get as much $ out if it as I possibly can.
The master collection is currently #4 on the registry with a grade of 9.85. I never focused on this set because I have been focusing on the basic set instead. I have been using the master set more or less as a record for everything I have.
Master Set Link
The main focus has been the basic set. It is #1 on the registry with a grade of 9.91 and 70.19% complete. All cards are psa 10s but 2 PSA 9 cards.
Basic Set Link
Also the collection falls #2 on the Basic and Collector issues with a grade of 9.92 at 58.42% complete , tied #3 on the Jeter rookie set grade of 9.60 and is 100% complete, #2 Basic Topps set grade of 9.92 at 94.44% complete, and #1 Master Topps Set grade of 9.76 at 22.46% complete.
My question is if I were to sell this collection after Jeter hits 3,000 hits. How should I go about it?
Should I break it up and sell them all individually?
Should I leave it as a collection of 397 cards?
Should I go through a consignment place like Mile High?
Not sell it at all and just give it to my son which was my original plan.
Any other ideas?
My main concern is at least getting back what I put into the set. I started the collection in 2007 and have dumped over 7G into it.
Possibly I would like to make some sort of profit so my time hasn't been a total waste.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time
Tim

I think that will be you're biggest hurdle. Getting over the fact that no matter what you decide to do, sell as a lot or break it up, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO MAKE YOUR MONEY BACK. it just does not happpen when you go to sell high rated registry sets. You likely paid way over current market price for many of your PSA 10's, which got you the #1 basic set, but at a price.
If you built the majority of the set by your own submissions, please ignore what I have said.
there are some serious Jeter collectors out there...
when you piece meal it out ...
you might be surprised with how well you will do...
Good Luck -
I am hoping, since you said "might", you might not have to sell...

Hi - Fwiw it has been both. I have bought alot and submitted alot. FWIW a lot of the cards have been picked up cheaply or I would not have won them for the set. The basic set I put 2.6 G into it. Within that set I can say I only over paid on 1 card and that was the 1997 Pinnacle. The rest on the set I picked up for cheap.
Also I forgot to mention I have been using profit money to fund the collection. Example. I grade 5 of the same card. I would keep one and sold rest so the card I kept was basically free...
Edit add: I really don't want to sell. Right now it looks like I have to. I just got laid off. I am ok right now but 6 months from now if I can't find work I will need to sell.
7gs for 355 jeter psa 10s is less than 20per, im sure you have lots of pop1s that will sell for $50 and $60
The 93 sp jeter 9 will bring 500+ at that time
im sure you would do fine if you did it like that
selling in one lot would leave a lot of money on the table.
if you leave it all to your son, i hate to say it but in 20yrs, those pop1s that will bring 50 and 60 next yr will probably be available for close to nothing.
<< <i>wait until he has 2992 hits, list every card at auction for 9.99 starting bid and i think you will do fine.

I like this approach. Thank you!
Having to sell sucks, big time.
Getting back in rocks!
For me personally, I won't be handing down or leaving my kids any cards. My personel interests in cards aren't really shared by them. And although they always try and act like they're interested, I know they're not, not really, 707.
Buying Vintage, all sports.
Buying Woody Hayes, Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, and Jesse Owens autographed items
totally agree. Right around 2990 hits, I'd post 50 Jeters a day and make a week long run out of it. That way you're not overwhelmed by listing and packaging nearly 400 cards in a day or two span.
I like the recent suggestion to list on hit #2922 and space them out!
GOOD LUCK! Wishing you the best and hope you find a new job for Christmas!
Doug
Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

ditto, very very bad time to have to sell Jeter's
Shane
Good luck if you have to sell. Hopefully, you won't. Just keep in mind that you can always start another collection at a later time.
FWIW, be sure to hold on to a few favorite cards, assuming you can narrow your favorites down.
Best of luck finding a new job!
Robert
I might start moving some now little by little leaving the best ones for last. That way you might build a following too.
I would not list more than 10 cards at anyone time. Sorry to hear about your current situation.
You might also want to see how you fare on the B/S/T forum here.
Good luck.
Steve
In all seriousness, Roger is right. When he gets close to 3,000 he'll have a huge fan base for a couple weeks, and a lot of people will overpay.
I would get that notion out of your head. You may, you may not but it is what it is. If you have to sell, you have to sell, and you get what you get. Don't worry about what you have into it. It's not a relevant factor.
If there are duplicate cards then I wouldn't list them all when he gets close to 3,000. I would spread it out. Otherwise you may flood the market.
Good luck to you.
Good luck either way and hopefully you'll find some work before you have to sell.
Very sorry to hear that you lost your job, tough market right now and it may indeed take 6 months plus to find a real solution to your job problem.
Curious as to what industry or line of work your in now? Would you be only looking in the field yoru in (is it a specialty field)
The only debate I am having is if I am keeping the Topps Master set or not. There are some killer cards that I enjoy in the set for example. Off the top of my head: 1998 Topps Minted in Coopers Town PSA 10 , All the Heritage cards, 2007 Topps Gold #40 Mantle/Bush PSA 10, 2007 Topps Red Back #40 Mantle/Bush PSA 10, 2007 Turkey Red black refractor PSA 10. Unless someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse I kind of don't want to see them go. I do need the money so I might have to sell the Topps Master set.
The rest I am going to have to part with even though I rather not.
I have been waiting for the 2990 mark. That is when I am going to start selling. My goal is to try and have it all gone before the end of the year. Thank you everyone for your advice.
Tim
I hate to hear someone forced to sell but that is what makes markets. Bail imediatley on cards that you can sell for the price you want and then work the others out a little slower.
