well I'll be... it went into a holder (large cent)

DennisHDennisH Posts: 14,040 ✭✭✭✭✭
This was a throw-in to a junk silver lot I bought two years ago. I think my cost really is zero. When the current Collectors Club free special came along I decided, "Oh what the heck..." So it looks like I now have my one and only certified large cent (pictures taken before submitting).

I was expecting a Genuine holder on account of corrosion (?), but a grade posted today: AG03. I think I'm pretty stoked!

When in doubt, don't.

That is a bit surprising. Clearly net graded at AG-03, but still.

I agree with MikeInFl, as well as the OP...I would have thought 'gennie' due to corrosion, also, so, nice score.
    I'll come up with something.

Being that copper is such a reactive metal, I believe the the grading companies should be a little bit lenient about ligh corrosion. As long as it's no longer active, but that's a bit excessive in my oppinion.

Pretty surprising to me that it is not in a genuine holder - SEGS??

Nice... surprising, but nice. Cheers, RickO

Maybe the graders were in a hurry and forgot to look at the reverse. No CAC sticker for this coin.

SEGS would give this coin a details grade and then note the corrosion on the label.

I'd worry about that thang corroding the holder and escaping.

Wow! There are no "Genuines" with the PCGS+, so that looks more like a bodybag candidate to me. I tried to submit an 1806 large cent with just a few lines from an early cleaning - bodybagged. I wish I had your grader.

When I submitted my sons’ large cents, it was a crap shoot all the way. It’s a whole new learning curve with large cents based on condition, not grade. Take a look at my set with pics and you will see what I mean.

  • When it comes to low grade coins like AG's they will grade a few problems that do not fly in any higher grade.
If they didn't there would be no AG's a coin that grade
would never slab as they all have problems at that grade.

Maybe you should review the PCGS guarantee.

I too am surprised, and I have had some seriously questionable copper end up in holders!

I don't think that's corrosion, I think it's verdigris. I think PCGS agreed, I don't think they would put unstable corrosion into a holder.

Even at zero acquisition cost and zero grading cost (I drop off and pick up in person)?
    When in doubt, don't.

Verdigris is a product of corrosion.

I know, a white elephant is supposed to come at too high a cost. This one didn't. Still, what to do with it????

Return it to PCGS because it's over graded.

I didn't think they would put stable corrosion into a slab either since any corrosion is a form of damage.
