POLL: Which duplicate merc to keep for the set?

coinlieutenantcoinlieutenant Posts: 9,319 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have been working on a date run of two sided toner mercs in gem and above for quite a while now. I picked up my second to last coin today and in the process added a second duplicate. Which 1944 dated coin should I keep for the set given that the set is focusing on two sided color, originality and eye appeal, of which I consider luster and color to be the most important, in that order? I am normally pretty decisive on which coin to include, but these are troubling me. The other coins currently in the set are included for display. They may help in voting. image The 1941 (MS67FB) was a very nice gift and currently resides in the set, but I am looking for something that has more even and complete toning.

For color and eye appeal, I choose #1. If you want the best strike, it's #2 (looks like a 67).

Coin #2 appears to have the best combination of luster & strike. It has the weakest color. I can see how you are split, but I would choose #2 because it the color is acceptable in the group and it's the highest graded and the luster and strike are the best.

I like #1 but for some reason I went with #3 as the bands look to be split, although not FSB.

    In order
    #1, #3, #2.

All look nice and #2 does have the best strike.

No brain here. I like #2 a bunch. The soft strikes on the two S coins does nothing for me.

I like all three, but I especially liked how coin #2 has a mix of original (maybe dipped?) white + toning.

I voted for #3, which puts me in the minority. No. 1 is actually my least favorite, as well- pretty but kinda ho-hum pretty and lacking that something extra. No. 3 just seems to have a lot going on and is a fun and interesting-looking coin.

The 1940-S and 1943-S pieces are just killer. Thanks for sharing. image

Is there anyone who things that even though coin #2 has full bands and coin #1 does not, that the strike on the reverse for coin #1 is better? I mean, look at the rest of the details. This demonstrates why FB is not a smart designation. So what!

I like coin 2 for the date set, but I like the MS67FB PCGS 1941 the most of any of them.

coin 1 by miles and miles. Superb in every way image
  • If the three coins were mine I would keep them all. They are all beautiful. If money is not the problem and you already own them, why let any of them get out of you possession. Keep them all, as Mr. Monk says, "You will thank me later." Coins like that don't come around every day.

Coin 2 is tilted in the bs NGC slab and did not photograph as well as the first 44S. I bet the 44D is just hammered strike wise.

BTW the 40S is a hell of a color coin.

Since the criteria were, in descending order of importance, two-sided color, lustre and strike, I'd take #1 over #3, #2 is out based on the reverse.

I'm really really confused about coin#2 being blah. I'm trying not to say anything negative about that response. However, I'll happily buy that man's rejects.

My favorite in the entire group was the 40P. An 80's S$1 that looked like that would be worth 10K+, Is anyone else here familiar with the acronym MFG?

I like the color and surfaces on coin 1.

I like the stike and luster on coin 2, but I'm wondering if the two hits on the fasces would keep in out of a 67 holder at our host.

Coin 3 has decent color and strike, and a cool die crack extending through the neck.

I think I would go with coin 1.
