Does psa give a reason why autographs aren't authentic?

I recently sent something along to someone at the sun times show, it was a ripken jr ball that was from a 200+ piece collection (this person constantly gets in person autos and I've bought multiple things from him before)... That I was basically 100% certain was real, looked real- and I was under the impression it was signed in person- I've bought about 40 pieces from this guy and this is the first piece to ever come back from psa or jsa that didn't get certed... (Or the person I sent it along with said it did atleast). I really want to avoid going to him to get my money back, although I know he will if I told him that.

Will they give you a reason it didn't come back or they just mark it as not authentic and they hand it back and say here you go?

Here's a picture just because

Typically they will just send a letter with all their standard reasons listed on it. It won't be specific.

I recently had a similar situation with PSA/DNA myself. I sent my Pacquaio signed gloves that I KNEW were real...they came back questionable authenticity. Well, when I got the package, there is a list of things for them to circle or "other" with a space to fill in....NOTHING was circled and NOTHING was filled in. They did not give any reason for the questionable authenticity. If that is how I get it back, in my eyes, they werent even looked at. So a waste of 100 bucks for me.

I sent to JSA and they were authenticated as they should have been. I know JSA have 2 boxing experts...I should have just sent to them to begin with. As someone here just said, it is only an opinion...or maybe lack of one. But they arent going to refund me any money for lack of opinion. I guess my lesson is learned...
  • Well this one wasn't even my money- but it was over nighted to someone - who then wasted the money on psa, and now he won't trade with me because he thinks it isn't good - even when I offered after I got it authenticated - so he's going to be paying shipping back and I feel bad, he paid for my shipping+ the auth+ shipping back and he's out a ton from that.

IMO you ought to refund his authentication fee as well as long as he can prove he paid for it. I offer that guarantee on every autograph I sell and IMO if a seller won't do that than they shouldn't be dealt with.

There have been a TON of Gretzky items hit the bay PSA/DNAd -- and most look as if they shouldn't have been slabbed.

A member here sent in a Gretzky card that was signed on the golf course. It looked pretty bad (Gretzky's on the go signature is nasty) and it didn't get slabbed.

I thought, at the time, PSA made the right move. Now there are a plethora of these nasty signatures slabbed.

I think that a lot of work does go into deciding the opinion of if a signature is real or not.

PSA should spend some time explaining exactly why they came to their decision, but it may give forgers tips on how to improve, and what PSA is looking for.
