90% halves or 90% quarters?

nam812nam812 Posts: 10,585 ✭✭✭✭✭
Pardon my ignorance if this is a ridiculous question about 90% pre 1964 junk silver, but if the selling price were equal, would you rather buy 50 halves or 100 quarters? My novice thinking says there is probably no difference since the troy ounces are equal, but I wanted to ask those that know a lot more than me if one was more desirable than the other. Also, if there is a difference, what is it?

  • I prefer halves but with silver sky-rocketing, quarters are fine. Halves contain just over 1/3 troy oz of pure silver and are in a better size for me.

    Again, it's personal preference really.

That's not a ridiculous question. Usually the halves are more desiderable than quarters and quarters are more desiderable than dimes.
I am not a fan of 90% but I have few Kennedy's and I like them. Maybe because they are bigger. jmho

The funny thing is that, for those of us who have stacked 90% with at least a little bit of SHTF mentality: dimes make the most sense.

They're the most divisible. You can use 5 dimes to make a half dollar, but you can't use a half or a quarter to make a dime. At least not without cutting it.

Same 90% silver. Same weight by $ value. Already hallmarked and divided in base 10 for ease of calculation (unlike quarters).

And if you consider the premiums on 1/10th eagles gold eagles vs 1 oz or even 1/2 oz, you'd think dimes would be the most sought after.

But back to the OP's question: My preference (most to least):

    1. WL halves (at least VG)
    2. 64 kennedys
    3. Washington quarters (at least xf)
    4. Frankies

But I'm kind of funny that way image

I don't have the SHTF mindset, but after reading so much of it here, I thought the same thing about the dimes.

Thanks for all the responses so far. Keep em coming.

  • One more thing I like about halves is the stubby rolls. Might sound crazy but those damn dime rolls bug me.

Given a choice at the same rate, people will take the halves 9 times out of 10.

Does a half dollar really have exactly double the silver content of a quarter?

It seems that it does, but I would not take that for granted.

I collect all three from whatever falls my way in circulation. I have grown fond of the half dollar. I guess I like the size, the design of the eagle and Kennedy. Its a very attractive coin and really exemplifies iconic USA.

I like that SHTF attitude (it took me awhile to figure out what it stood for).....dimes would be choice.

To answer the question in bold; yes, a freshly minted half dollar had twice the silver in it that a quarter had and five times the silver that a dime had. Given wear that occurs over time, it might be figured that the half dollar would lose less metal than the smaller denominations with use, but most of us aren't too worried about that.

I've always bought halves, except that I most recently bought dimes. And when I was buying OBW or BU rolls, it didn't matter.

All I own are BU/OBW rolls although the recent prices have kinda put a damper on my purchases. Seems that, at least in BU rolls, dimes are cheaper than quarters and quarters are cheaper than halves. Traded all of my halves from years of roll hunting awhile back for ASEs. Haven't regretted it either.

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

Yes, halves are by far the favorite. Personally, I like dollars (which have a premium), halves, dimes, and lastly quarters. I like dimes because of their easy bargaining power if things take a turn for the worse.
