$200 mil a day? That's 20,000 people @ $10,000 expenses per day. Maybe they meant Rupees which is about $4.5mil in US$.

They don't lie.
Maddow earned a Doctorate in Philosophy (DPhil) in politics from Oxford University.
Olbermann graduated from Cornell in 1979 with a B.S. in communications arts.
Glenn Beck/Rush Limbaugh/Sean Hannity are all dropouts.
Maddow says, "I'm undoubtedly a liberal, which means that I'm in almost total agreement with the Eisenhower-era Republican party platform."

The funny thing is people believe it was 200 Million US$
Olberwan was a sportscaster first. He seems to come off like he's reading from a script, not the case with Maddow who seems refreshingly original. Don't forget to toss Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, James Cameron, Tom Hanks, Tiger Woods, Mark Zuckerberg (Face Book creator), and our own Jim Halperin and other self-made businessmen on to your drop-out list. Some guy named A. Lincoln from Illinois is also on that list as well. Warren Buffett dropped out on his first attempt. A lot of the most successfull coin dealers out there today did so well in coins along the way that they decided not to go to college. Some of the best people that ever worked for me didn't go to college. They either lacked the money at the time or just didn't feel comfortable in that type of environment. It was quite obvious if they had gone to college they would have been very successfull in another career path. Beck and Hannity didn't make the list below so maybe you should contact them. Limbaugh's entry is amusing. True that Hannity and Beck both left school, but both attended later in life (ages 27 and 32) while dealing with many issues. I give them credit for trying to find themselves and succeeding against heavy odds. I only wish I had some of that special something that these dropouts had....but I'll settle for their paycheck.
Famous dropouts from A to Z - it's a long list
A lot of creative type people on that list. So no surprise that a structured and often-limited environment like college doesn't work for them.

If you factor in the cost of fully-manned and operational warships in support of the visit, I think you can easily get a much more reasonable per person expense.
Carriers and support ships don't come cheap.

If you TRULY believe that this trip will cost anywhere even close to $200,000,000 per day then its only logical that you are either:
A) Very gullible and naive.
OR
So desperate in your attempt to justify your anger and hatred of our sitting president that you WANT to believe any claim....no matter how ridiculous....that attempts to denegrate the actions of our sitting president.
Thats all there is to it. So which of those fits you best?

Scroll up. Apparently NPR ran the story first.
FWIW, if the story were true, I'd definitely have a problem with the expense. Wouldn't you?
I knew it would happen.
Absolutely. However, im neither naive enough, nor angry enough to accept as FACT anything I hear from any media source...mainstream or not....if the story sounds too unreal to be true.
And thats what happened here.....despite who released these numbers initially, the fact that the news spread like wildfire among all the right wing media outlets goes to prove there are ALOT of people who fall into category A or B in my above post. Do you dispute that assertation?
I haven't done a survey on that. The previous posts don't seem to back up your assertions 100%, but I'm sure that any number of news sources ran with the number in order to be "first", and I wouldn't exclude the liberal media from that either.
Frankly, I don't need unsubstantiated news stories as a basis for my complete and utter rejection of what's going on in D.C., and that does include the Executive Branch. I'm hoping that it turns around, but I wouldn't bet one devalued clad dime that it will.
I knew it would happen.

<< <i>FWIW, as a right-winger through and through, I think our investment in sending the President to one of the largest growing economic centers on the planet to promote our goods is well worth it. With all the idiots in that part of the World, and as the Commander in Chief, he should be fully protected during his travels. I doubt he is going there for chits and grins. To date, I have had very little problems with how this President is handling our foreign affairs. >>
It's a pleasure to read an intelligent post from the other end of the political spectrum. The level of what passes for discourse in politics is disgusting. Whatever the cost was, or is, does anyone expect our President, whomever he be, to stay home because a trip is....too expensive
I know I may shock some here, but no political party has a lock on the truth. Let's criticize and discuss, but can't we do it intelligently?

<< <i>I checked to see what the cost per day for an operational Aircraft Carrier is and two sources said about $500K per day ($160M/yr) That's approx $100/day per man which seems absurd unless our servicemen are working for $12/hr on average incl. benefits (incl pilots, officers, non-coms, senior petty officers, etc.). That doesn't include the cost of supplies, materials, rations, fuel, jets, operations, etc. In any event, it's not going to make a dent towards the $200 MILL/day.... not unless 10% of the entire US fleet shows up.
roadrunner >>
Wouldn't these costs still be the same even if Obama stayed at home?

But if all those ships were being pulled from deployed ships in the Indian Ocean then they probably would have little change in the overall operating costs.

Being a success in a creative activity despite lack of education has nothing to do with
requiring journalists and commentators to have higher education credentials necessary to
analyze complex issues instead of making stuff up, ranting, or presenting simplistic jingoism
like "you're either with us, or with the terrorists."

Mistake, as I thought the 'sorry' implied.
That includes the secret service agents, staff, armored cars and back ups. back up jet , lodging and security equipment
as well as all of the minutia that goes with presidential security. It does not matter who is president, the cost, while high
is necessary.

You must have not bothered to look at the list even though you brought up the questionable reference concerning dropouts. A large % of that list, including honest Abe were not artists. Are you saying that KO analyzes these complex issues better than Limbaugh merely because he is on prime TV? I don't back either horse but don't see a close horse race here.
Higher education may indeed help bring one's skills to analyze to the forefront, but I would submit that they are either already there or they aren't. No amount of higher education is going to make you into a critical thinker if the base material is missing. Maybe a communications major can pipe in but I would think the key there is to be a polished communicator rather than a critical thinker. One's critical thinking tends to come from outside what one does in the structured classroom. Hence it can be picked up in a myriad of ways other than through a formal degree. One can attend all the classes they want and regurgitate what is said to them but it doesn't help them them to be an original, critical thinker.
