PSA Unveils Set RegistrySM Matching Program

PSA Unveils Set RegistrySM ''Matching'' Program
November 2, 2010
Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) has introduced the PSA Set RegistrySM "Matching" Program, an innovative new program to assist its members in building their PSA Set Registry sets.
With this program PSA matches the Set Registry members' want lists with what an auction company or dealer is offering at auction or for retail sale. The Set Registry member receives a direct email that specifically lists the cards or memorabilia a dealer is offering that matches their want list.
"This is an important service that makes it unnecessary for our members to constantly monitor numerous auctions and dealers' inventories. We do it for them. We know how important each and every card can be for a member who is building an all-important collection. Imagine getting notified when a card or piece of memorabilia that you've been looking for is offered," said Joe Orlando, President of PSA, a division of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT).
"There is nothing that the Set Registry member needs to do other than be a participant in our PSA Set Registry program. The entire program is confidential. A registrant's personal information is not disclosed to the dealer. If the member decides to contact the dealer or bid on the item(s) in auction, it is entirely the member's option. PSA will not disclose the hobbyist's identity to the dealer. We are merely notifying them of what is available to help them complete their set/s," explained BJ Searls, PSA Set Registry Manager.
"PSA is constantly looking for ways to improve its services and hobbyists' collecting experiences. The PSA Set Registry is the largest and most recognized program in the hobby with nearly 60,000 sets registered. New collections are added every day. As the registry continues to grow and more hobbyists assemble unique, high-quality collections, the competition for choice cards and memorabilia can be difficult. And hobbyists may find themselves too busy to monitor the number of auctions and inventories offered. Our goal is to offer the PSA Set Registry "Matching" Program as an invaluable service to assist loyal set registrants in building their collections. Not only will this service help collectors, it can also help consignors achieve higher prices realized with participating sellers," Searls added.
"We are excited to announce that PSA will be launching this new program in conjunction with Mile High Card Company's next auction which closes November 18th. Mile High is one of the premier auction companies offering three to four quality auctions each year and also conducting bi-weekly eBay auctions," said Orlando.
Headlining their November auction, Mile High is offering the 1914 Cracker Jack #1 All Time Finest set on the PSA Set Registry, with the single highest-graded examples and an impressive 6.59 GPA that has allowed the set to be ranked as the Number One All Time Finest set for the last nine years.
Mile High is also offering an amazing, high-grade 1933 Goudey Complete Set which is the #5 All Time Finest in the Registry. It will be broken up and offered in the auction. All 240 cards will be auctioned individually including the exceedingly rare #106 Napoleon Lajoie graded PSA NM/MT 8. This along with over 1,500 other items will be offered in Mile High Card Company's auction that ends November 18.
Brian Drent, President of MHCC says, "We are excited to be the first company to partner with PSA in their new Set Registry 'Matching' program. We believe that utilizing a program like this will enable MHCC to stay out in front of our competition and to more effectively work with our clients and help our consignors realize a greater return on their prized material."
If you have some missing "puzzle pieces" in your Set Registry, you may find yourself receiving an e-mail directly from PSA alerting you to any PSA-graded cards or graded memorabilia you've been looking for that will be offered in Mile High's auction.

you wouldn't be "whining" now..boo..would ya??
Will it be possible to opt out of this program as a
set registry participant?
I'd rather not be contacted or get emails from dealers
about cards I may need for my sets. I know this request
may sound odd to many, but part of the fun for me at least in building PSA sets, is in the hunt of tracking down the last cards you need for a set.
Plus I have a feeling the cards being offered by these
dealers at a fixed price will be full or over retail.
I realize many will be available via auction too, so since I receive many of the auction catalogs already, the service would seem redundant in many respects.
Not knocking the service as I can see many collectors utilizing it,
but it's just not for me.
<< <i>you wouldn't be "whining" now..boo..would ya?? >>
I leave that to the trained professionals.
Any updates on your submission status? We're all aching for an update, and it's been a few days since last we heard.

<< <i>Will all auction sites have access to this info? Personally, if I'm going to drop big $ on a card I really need I would rather an auction house not know that, i realize it's a pessimistic view of auction houses but many have earned it. >>
I never thought about PSA releasing our information but it seems like this could be provided regardless of our decision to opt in or out.
<< <i>It would make more sense if there was an option inside the Set Registry to make your own "want list", rather than PSA assuming you actually want that card.
I like this approach.
If you read this part of the press release you will see that we are NOT giving anyone your personal information.
The auction houses and dealers are providing PSA with the information and PSA is distributing it.

<< <i>Same for me. I'd prefer an opt-in program. I don't really care to be contacted by Collector's Corner or the handful of other dealers currently in the program that sell cards for $50 that I can buy all day long on ebay for $10. >>
I agree wholeheartedly. While I appreciate them telling me where something I may need is available at in case I overlook something, I don't want to get spam from Collector's Corner and their overpriced wares. The price of cards is going down for everyone else, yet miraculously, their cards always seems to go up........defies logic.
No good deed goes unpunished.

Instead of opting in, we must now jump through the appropriate hoops to opt out. Like others, I get enough spam. Besides, I have other methods to be advised of any particular card I may be seeking, I dont' need to sift through notices, emails, whatever to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I understand you will not be giving out our personal information (Although some might consider what cards they are looking to buy personal information). But will they, dealers/auction houses know how many people have a particular card on their "want list?" It seems like it could create a situation where people could be taken advantage of. Then again, some people don't like the idea making their sets viewable on the registry and some do.
-Mike
Rebecca is not the "opt out" person. The email will have an opt out. We didn't include an opt out in the press release posted on our website.
All the paranoia that is going on with us sharing want lists and personal information is not what's happening.
Example...they send us the auction lots...we match to people who may need/want it....we send the email.
If you have nothing that matches the list...you shouldn't be getting an email...
<< <i>
Also, there is a link in the email to opt out if you choose.
Carol >>
Hi Carol...
Let me point out a flaw in this.
I'm a DSL user, so my real email address is horribly long. My solution is to use something shorter thru my ISP, then retrieve the email thru public domain software. My outgoing email does *NOT* use the same email address. It uses my real account, with that same ugly name. That way, anyone who replies to my email will have it go to my machine directly, which is more desirable. Unfortunately, that means my request gets rejected.
From the email, the procedure is to contact Rebecca. I got the "vacation" response that she is out of the office. What timing!
I also find it annoying that the necessary info is buried in HTML. HTML is *NOT* a standard for email, though may people try to make it such.
In any case, in the future, please allow users to make any configuration settings/changes in their account instead of thru email.
Thanks!
I haven't seen the email yet but if it has gone out, that is a moot point.
The "contact Rebecca Tran" is for sellers wanting to take part in the program.
In the email there would be an "opt out" link.
It sounds like you have a very specific issue regarding your email so I advise you to send an email to the PSA customer service department at info@psacard.com.
They can then address your specific email issue.
Carol
Major Conflict of interest here. A TPGer has NO business pitching or pushing cards for sale.
Scrap the ideal and put the extra effort in to grading and other customer service areas.
<< <i>...........In the email there would be an "opt out" link................ >>
There was, and I did.
<< <i>A TPGer has NO business pitching or pushing cards for sale >>
They have done no such thing. They aren't the ones selling the cards - last I checked CONSIGNORS submitted cards to auctions and got the checks from the auction houses. PSA is not in the consignment business. It is a courtesy to let you know that something you might be interested in is being currently up for auction. I truly believe their intentions are good and they are not out to "get over" on people. Too many "conspiracy theorists" here........yea, I don't want to know when 707 has one of his overpriced gems up, but I do like the idea that maybe something I might need might be reasonably priced up for auction......
