Coin Guy with some card questions

My son-in-law is needing to sell some cards. I know zilch about ball cards so I enter your house carefully to avoid soft spam. PCGS does grade cards right? and what is a typical price for one (or group submissions?) Should only "better" cards be submitted? Is this thread going to be worthless without pictures? Thanks in advance.

Well that was a painful Photobucket experience but here are a few.

No worries. Hopefully if any of us card guys wander over to the coin forum we'll be treated equally well. You need to supply some more information on the cards. Yes, PSA (card division of CU) does grade cards. Cost depends on many factors but they have some of the best specials ever running this month ($4-$5 per card). Scans are the best info to provide as people can give you an idea of whether they are worth grading. As with coins, value depends a lot on condition and issue. Most card stashes out there are from the late 80s/early 90s. If that's the case, chances are about 99% that they aren't worth grading. In any event, provide some more info and we'll give you a good idea of their relative value.

Those are some nice cards, but most are mid-grade. If it were me, I would still pay to have them graded. You could probably find someone to piggy-back onto their sub. There are some really nice grading specials this month.

WHATEVER YOU DO, please do not photocopy the cards and pretend you're shredding them. That's what the last coin guy did. Good luck with your sale!

    Hi Lotso,

I had the same issue a few months back with some coins I had. Of course I only halfway listened to the coin guys! My question would be is your son-in-law trying to add resale value, or just entomb these cards for the fun/protection/OCD of it? My coins I wanted to get rid of so I graded the rarest ones according to the red book, but some were lower grade so it really didnt add anything to the resale value, and may even have taken away ion some cases. One coin however was my great grandmothers, so I only graded that one to save for my personal collection. I would think you could get a better response depending on your son-in-law's goals. IMO I would say only one or two might be worth grading only to determine that are authentic and not altered.

Thanks for the replies. The son-in-law is wanting to sell them and he/we were wondering if getting them graded would be worth it. What is a typical turn around time for the cards?

I'd probably grade the Williams and maybe the Mantle.

    "Molon Labe"

  • If you piggy back on a special for $5 per, the Mantle and Williams are no brainers for getting grading. As a few others have said, the cards are mid grade, so I'm not sure if the other ones are worth it to get graded--if sold via ebay, they may go for more ungraded...

Will PSA grade Mantle and Williams under the 5.00 special?

    Good for you.

I agree with others' recommendations. Grade the Mantle and Williams. Roughly estimating from the scans, the Mantle would grade a 4 and the Williams a 3. Based on average auction price history from VCP, the Williams in a 3 goes for $83.62 and the Mantle in a 4 goes for $74.94. I think it will be difficult to get those through under the $5 service level but you can always ask. Maybe since they're low grade, they'd let them through since the value in that grade is under $100. For the rest, you could consider listing them in the BST section of the PSA message boards or list them on eBay.

    Good luck!

I don't think it would be a problem getting that through on the $5 special in that grade.
  • Since the value of all the cards seem to be < $100, I would sell them all raw and not get them graded. However, if you ebay the cards, hopefully you have an ebay id with a decent amount of feedback, especially as a seller. Otherwise, if people see you selling raw cards with no feedback, they'd be much more likely to question the authenticity of the cards.
