1951 Bowman Mantle PSA 6

I'm looking at getting back into buying cards again, and have a chance to purchase a PSA 6, 1951 Bowman Mantle. Is there anything I need to look for, or be concerned with, since it is graded? I have never messed around with PSA, or any graded cards before. Can they be taken out and replaced with a lesser graded card? If so, how would one spot that?

Also, any ideas on what a decent price for this card would be? Thanks for the help.

Just make sure you see it in person, and you know your 1951 Bowman cards.

There are many a "craigslist fakes" still out there, and collectors have lost thousands of $$ on these worthless counterfeits. The '51 Mantle is one of them and has been seen in PSA-4 through PSA-6 grades. story in Net54 link below...

Yes, be very careful, where did you find the card?
  • Thanks for that info. It's a Craigslist ad, for a local seller. (which makes that article even more relevant) Is there any way to check the PSA number to compare?

    Don't do it. Seriously.

  • Thanks for the advice. I suppose there is a possibility that this person was scammed at one point, realized it, and is trying to unload it. I'm not going to be knowledgeable enough to spot a fake, nor were the pictures good enough to tell anything.

Just because the PSA certification numbers match doesn't mean that the card is real. Consider that fact as well.

STAY AWAY!!!! That case has been cracked and sealed back. Notice the snowy edges on the holder.

What Mr. Mint said. 100% fraud.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

  • Good thing you asked about it here. I agree with what the others said, total fake reseal job.
  • Thanks for the advice, all. Probably saved me some money tonight.

Anyway, about the Pujols ball, I did send it in to Spence, and it came back "non-authentic" (or whatever phrase they used) It didn't surprise me, but I've done some more research since, and may end up loaning it to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. I know it's authentic, and that's all that matters (since it's sitting in my closet and not selling ) image

The Mantle card looks legit to me. PSA number matches. Case is a little snowy but many PSA cases look like that and are untampered. Its the way they are made. Same is true with SGC cases.
  • I hope that's sarcasm Blacklabel. Who in there right mind would sell a legit 51 Mantle on Craigslist? I'm also in the market for one and would stay away from it. The obvious reason is it looks like someone pried open the case.

There's no way of telling from the pic if the card looks good or not, and PSA numbers don't mean anything either if it's a reseal.

The slab looks compromised. In the first picture, note the tiny crack on the side just across from Mickey's elbow. That's the type of crack that happens when the slab's been peeled open. The heavy frosting seems to be leading away from the top right corner.

    Better safe than sorry.

    fakety fake fake.

  • << <i> Who in there right mind would sell a legit 51 Mantle on Craigslist? [/q

The many of thousands of former ebay sellers who are looking for other places to sell their cards. Since ebays drastic rule changes and hike in fees, in the last couple of years, sellers are trying out others sites. and craigslist is one of them because it costs nothing to list or sell. I have found some great deals on CL.

Right. 'Cause nobody, I repeat nobody on eBay is looking for a '51 Mantle in PSA 6 condition. Better avoid the $50 FVF fee and go the freebie route.

Care to share any scans of those "great deals" of yours?

Uh, you forgot the $200 paypal fee. Ebay + paypal fee equals 15%. Plus the possible fraudulant snad case and negative feedback.

    Craigslist = 0 fee And 0 stress
  • Mr Thunderdan, would you please refrain?

It's not a good picture, but the typeface on the flip looks wrong.

That appears to be the typeface of the Craigslist fakes.

Checking certification numbers won't do anything for you - they copied cert #s of real graded cards.

    Stay away. Stay far away.

Black Label: $50 max FVF if you take advantage of the free auction style listings. On high end cards, you simply negotiate the price first and set up the auction with a buy it now. The FVF will max out at $50. It's great from a seller's POV.

Do you have pics of the cards you bought on Craiglist?

  • I haven't bought it and haven't decided to contact the seller yet to look at it. I may just pass on the headache and buy a 1987 Topps Tiffany set instead off Craigslist......That would be safer.

If I'm selling a 1951 Bowman Mantle, I wouldn't take a picture of it from up in a tree, and I wouldn't sell it on the number one scammer site on the web. Even if it's real, that much money isn't worth losing to find out.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Yeah but Craigslist equals zero stress.....................for the scammer generally.

Buying off Craigslist is a crap shoot at best.

Yes i know but you dont seem to understand that when you sell an item on ebay, both ebay and paypal collects their final value fee. Paypals fee will be more on a high dollar item.

Nope i sold them all over a year ago.

    Dear Mr. Nightcrawler,

Shall I refrain from complimenting Dpeck on his hot wife or making fun of that ugly-ass Andre the Giant wrestling card? I have no answer for Black Label. Stumped.
