Cracking out a PSA 10?

So, I needed a 1996 Bowman's Best Atomic Refractor Matt Morris for my SF Giants alumni rookie card collection. After several months of looking, a PSA 10 showed up on Ebay with a $10/dlvd BIN, so I picked it up.

The collection I got this card for is in a 2 row shoe-box style box with the cards in sleeves and/or top loaders. The box isn't tall enough to accommodate graded cards, and the only cards that I have graded are the ones with significant value that are kept elsewhere.

I'm leaning towards cracking this puppy out, putting it in a sleeve and top loader and just adding it in with the rest.

Is there any reason for me NOT to do this?

  • Is there much interest in this set in general? Would someone want the 10 for the set they may be building? If the answers lean towards no then crack away, if they lean towards yes maybe wait and see if a raw one comes available. jmo

There are some people who crack their cards out for display purposes...there is someone on this board who does this for his older football cards...can't remember who though.

If you crack it and someday decide you want your set graded, you may not get a 10 on it the next time.

I have no intention on paying the "PSA Tax" on this collection.

  • Not sure if it really matters, but if you did want to sell it at some point down the road having it in a holder would probably increase the value to some extent.

I like the idea of just sticking it on the underside of the lid. Since its only one graded card, you can do this and will have a nice effect. The card is worth more holdered.

On the otherhand, you paid only $10 for the card, basically, the grading fee. You can crack it out and put it in the same type of card protection as the rest of the set. Having everything uniform like that also makes an impression.

My advice is to keep it under the box lid for a while and then think about this again. You may like the way it looks mounted under the box lid.

  • If you would have paid the same for a raw, crack it. Otherwise, just keep it holdered as a "filler" untill you can get a raw copy. Although, maybe that would opposite of a filler. A digger?

  • I think you have already paid some "PSA Tax" for the $10 that you have spent already. This happens to me alot but I don't think I would crack a 10, though.

I have not cracked out a 10 before, but I have cracked out many for my Cardinals collection. I have my Cardinals collection in 19 albums. I have even cracked out PSA/DNA signed Topps cards to put in my album including 7 or 8 Lou Brocks.

If your collection is not graded and you need it out for display purposes - bust 'er out!
